I now know (after a few years with it under my belt) the DeVille isn't the best practice amp.

So my question refers to the preamp section because, as I understand from some thorough reading, it will likely shape the tone more than anything else -- aside from some intrusive work of which I am not capable -- in my circumstances (i.e. optimizing my sound in a Living Room Environment).

I've tried these preamp configurations:

12ax7s in V1, V2 & V3 (stock config) = Too loud when I reach fuzz I like

12au7s in V1 and V2, 12ax7 in V3 = Much too clean for me

12ax7s in V1 and V2, 12ay7 in V3 = Close but no cigar

12ax7s in V1 and V2, 12au7 in V3 = Closest I've gotten it to my taste

12ax7 in V1, 12ay7 in V2, 12au7 in V3 = Not fuzzy enough

That said, I've always liked the Vox tone. It's probably what I should've bought in the first place, but I can't afford it right now.

I'm wondering if I can use EF86s in any part of my preamp section. Is this possible?

How about EL84s? I know they're usually for the poweramp section, but can they be utilized in the DeVille's preamp phase?

Both have 9-pin setup. It seems worth a shot, but I just want to know if I'll fry anything in the amp.

Any other suggestions, configurations?

Thanks.

A couple of years ago I got a great deal on a used Devil-le 4x10, the loudest combo amp this side of Hell. It was a home-used cream puff that the guy's wife made him sell because it was too loud.

I don't know much about swapping tubes to achieve your goal but I'd be careful if I were you. It's cheaper to buy a nice practice amp that F-Up an $800 amp.

I practice alone with the volume at approx 1.5 and it's fine (fine tune volume on the guitar). When I practice with my band I crank it way up to 2.

I also practice alone with a G-DEC 30 (various drum settings are a good practice tool). If you're just practicing you don't need the ultimate tone, do you?

Good luck.
