Most know that the Hot Rod Deluxe is a great clean amp ... I have read reviews, and I have to agree, that the drive channel just isn't that good.

If you have this amp and play 80s rock (Kiss, Dio, Iron Maiden) what distortion pedal are you using? Do you use it on the clean channel only, and how are you satisfied with the results?

I have an MXR Distortion III on the clean channel but I really need a THD Hot Plate or something - it is so loud to get a really good sound. The MXR is not a 'metal' pedal by no means ... cranked wide open, its a good rock pedal but not a metal sound.

What do you use?

I use either a Maxon OD-9 (favorite) or a Boss MetalZone (wish I had saved the money, the sound is too mechanical).

Hmm ... I'd thought the Metal Zone might be okay. I tried the Boss DS-1 and everyone in the room thought it was no good with this amp. I did buy an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff and I love it on the clean channel. I can dial it back for more of an overdrive sound or crank it 1/2 way open for a more metal sound, with the amp only on 2 or less. Just what I needed.

I agree though, it is more 'mechanical' sounding - can't say it is too 'digital' sounding, so I guess you are right. My EH really throws some grit on there at low volumes, but when the amp is cranked to about 4, I can use the MXR Distortion III ... it is MUCH more organic and smooth sounding - definitely more tube distortion rather than the "electronic"(?) distortion.

Much cheaper than a THD Hot Plate though!
