I have a Blues Jr that I got two years ago, and I really like it. I hadn't played it in a little while though. For x-mas I got a TC Electronic Nova Station and when I started playing it through the Blues Jr, I got a ton of hiss when I used the overdrive. So I started trouble shooting and found the following:

  • The hiss is the amp. It happens when the amp is being overdriven, whether that's an external pedal or by turning the volume up.
  • The fat switch also increases the hiss.
  • It doesn't hiss with the volume turned down (3-4).
  • Once it's hissing, the louder the Master, the louder the hiss.
  • I've plugged it in a couple of different places in my house, but that doesn't seem to matter.
  • It won't hiss unless there's a cable plugged in.

Anyone got any ideas? Is this a powering issue? A tube issue? I'm pretty sure that the amp didn't use to make this much noise when overdriven, but I'm not a 100% sure. The hiss is bad enough that it's coloring my tone and starts to audibly creep in as single held notes start to fade.

Thanks for any help!

Perhaps a preamp tube. Might be a good place to start.

Just replace it and see if the problem goes away? The amp doesn't get a ton of use. Isn't two years kind of fast for the tube to die?

Nope, they can go at any time.
If the amp don't hiss without the Nova Station, I'd look there or at the patch cords first. Tube amps will hiss, It's the nature of the beast.

I initially thought it was the Nova System, but it's not. The Blues Jr hisses badly on it's own when the volume is turned up to get some overdrive. It also hisses when using the overdrive from the Nova System.

Maybe you need a Noise Supressor....
