Well, here goes ... yes, I've got a 40W Fender tube amp -- Hot Rod Deluxe Python edition.

This this is massively loud so I need to get the volume down while maintaining the tone - if possible. I figure someone here has this similar problem and may can help. I've heard the OmniSonic volume box will just saturate the preamp without really hitting the power amp section hard - resulting in thin sound I guess.

What is the best proven quality approach to making a 40W tube somewhat useful for practicing at home?

I have a `63 Princeton and that`s 40w. Between the volumn control on the amp and the guitar the volumn is low enough to practice in the house. I make my tone adjustments on the guitar itself.
