I've had my SS combo for over a year and am having a re-occuring problem. After playing it at maybe 1/2 full volume for 2 or 3 hours the amp starts to crackle, make pops, and have some real nasty distortion that goes in and out over time.

At first I though it was the Edison 120 VAC power dropping too much, but now I'm thinking the amp is just a poor design and it's overheating. I know
I can mount a $5 fan in the back to cool it, but I shouldn't have to do that to a $1,000 product.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

No reason to reply if you're going to reply sarcastically like that. I've been playing guitar for 25+ years, so I know a bad amp when I hear it.

Ears huh?

I`m shooping around for a new amp and hearing stuff like this makes me a little gun-shy.

Have you tried a different plug in? Maybe overtaxing the power supply from house circuitry? Ive heard theories that long playing may warm up your house wiring and cause issues. Or house wiring being run close to other wiring, or coiled up in places you can't see. -I don't know maybe wive's tales, but changing plugs so you are on a total different circuit can probably rule that out.

Other than that, are you happy with the amp? I like the sound samples on the website.

Good amp for loud jamming/ small gigs?

I also seen a guy posting about volume variations when using the footswitch, this happenning to you?

Hi JRmjusic. I was the one commenting about the iussue of the volume variations with the footswitch, which have gone away. I kept the amp on for a long time on Saturday and did not experience any volume issues at all. I did experience one pop/buzz during the time it was sitting there but not sure if it was similar to what is described in the post. Static electricity maybe?

As for the amp itself, I'd say it's wonderful. It is very clean and sounds great. The burn channel can also be adjusted to a very nice distorted sound just using the controls. So far, I love this amp. :-)

I've had my SS for about a year now and recently had some hard to find issues with it. Turned out, after some fustrating shop time, that it was bad power tube sockets, (actually cheap power tube sockets). Mine is a combo, and they are always a little rougher on tubes. It's hard to find a good tech these days, so first you have to shop around for one who knows what the hell he's doing. But anyway this guy replaced the sockets, and the amp is back to it's $@! kickin' self!

Turns out I am going with the bandmaster vm. seems a good amp for the jamming I mostly do, I`m pretty excited though.

Good point about finding a good amplifier repair person. For years around here it was essential to visit this old Asian fellow for repairs. Funny thing was he couldn't speak english very well, didn't seem too concerned with the symptoms, he would just say "is okay, I fix!"
Then when you picked it up he would just say "was broken" and hand you a list of parts he replaced. He was a magician.
