You'll probably get a lot of votes for the Super Champ XD and I'll be the first. Great tube tone, decent distortion channel (if you're into that) and a few useful (albeit just one at a time) effects. At 15 watts, it should be more than enough for practice, even playing with others unless you have a drummer that can't keep it down.

For a small gig, I'd even mic the SCXD and for a coffeehouse type setting, it might be enough without mic'ing.

Since I play mostly old school rock, jazz, blues, folk, etc., and don't carry around a lot of pedals, the SCXD and (depending on what I'm playing) a wah or my TS-808 overdrive are about all I need. Important to me too is that the clean channel has a very decent sound.

I love my Vibro Champ XD. Small size, sounds great, even the DSP sounds good.

I would have to say my #1 choice would be the G-Dec 30 then the Super Champ XD, finally the Champion 600 (needs some pedals). The G-Dec for practice is great. It took me a while to get the sounds I wanted but now I use it everyday. I do have all 3 amps and use them all.

I'm partial to older silverface Champs. i have a 74 that's incredible sounding. It hand wired and you can find them for decent prices on ebay. Beautiful natural distortion. No effects needed.

Here's my analysis:

1) Do you have/like to use your own effects? -> Blues Jr.

or

2) Do you want on-board/included effects? -> Super Champ XD

or

3) Do you want all the "bells and whistles" included? -> G-DEC

Super Champ XD or Vibro Champ XD would be good choices.

Great answer, nicely spelled out.

Unless you want nothing but tubes, I strongly suggest you look at the Roland Cubes before you buy anything.

The Champ 600 ain't bad, I have two. They handle outboard effects very well and won't have the police at your door.

+1 :D

For a tube practice amp I like the '65 PR Reissue.

This is exactly right!

I got tired of having a bunch of stuff I didn't use so I just got rid of my G-Dec for a Super Champ XD. It also sounds 100x better and it's all tube. Someone else said it already as well but it is loud enough for jams or small gigs as well so it really is the best amp out there in the price range. I could not be happier with it.

Trust me, I played every amp I could find at the store ;)

Hello Danavision,

Lets not forget about the
Pro junior, it's a happining litttle amp.
4 tubes in the box and a ton of tone.
I use my blues Jr 90% of the time but
I may swap the 600 for one of these babies.

Cheers.
