Does anyone have an opinion on the new Princeton Recording amp? I'd love to get something like this, but I think it's a tad pricey for what you get.

Feedback anyone?

I bought one of these last weekend and am quite pleased with it. I have a Fender Twin Reverb (65) along with Marshall and Boogie amps, but wanted a smaller amp for recording. The inclusion of a compressor, overdrive and especially the XLR out (speaker emulated) and built-in attenutator were key features I was looking for.

I'm quite pleased with the XLR recording out as it produces a nice warm smooth tone, which works well for me.

So far I've used it with my strat (American Standard) and my Gibson ES336 (w/57 Classic humbuckers). Both sound great!

Hey guys. I got a Princeton Recording amp a few days ago. Unfortunately, it was one of those "dent/scratch" kind of deals. I would have been okay with a dent or a scratch, but the attenuator had a short in it and the compressor effect only worked intermittently - the amp had clearly been abused by its previous owner. However, even with those limitations, I was very impressed. Unlike many amps, the overdrive on the amp sounds very natural - more like a natural progession of the tone instead of an entirely different sound. Very easy to blend in as a step up from the straight Princeton tone. The amp responds very well to guitar volume adjustments, and it was easy to get settings where a little crunch was just a short knob turn away. Sounded great with both strats and a PRS SE.

Since this one was damaged, I'm sending it back. My only concern about getting a replacement is the sufficiency of headroom and total volume available out of this amp (I would be using it more for gigging small venues than recordings). Since the attenuator wasn't working properly, I couldn't accurately assess how much clean headroom is available, nor how effective the amp would be with bass and drums - assuming it wasn't miked.

Anybody have any thoughts on the "gig-ability" of the Princeton? Alternate recommendations?

Thanks to all.

I would go for a bigger amp given that you'll be playing with drums.

Hi There,
I have one of these amps, but am slightly concerned about a couple of things.

Firstly when I turn it on, with both volumes on 0, it makes a big thudding sound.

Secondly it hisses horribly, which is not really very good for close mic'ing it, as all I can hear is the hiss. This is when the TIPA is at full volume.

Anyone else have these kind of problems?

Cheers
Scott

The "Thudding" sound is harmless. It's there because the T.I.P.A. has to start up separately from the amplifier.

The hiss level should be similar to an old Princeton Reverb, i.e. more hiss the more the volume is turned up. I have compared new & old. Also, is the amp on a chair or table, aimed at your head?

Engaging the Overdrive and Compressor functions will also add hiss, just as it would with standalone stomp boxes.

Hope this helps, enjoy!

Shane

Hi Shane,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Thanks also for the reassurance re the thudding sound, I was beginning to think mine may be faulty.

The amp is on a proper amp stand, which in turn is on the floor, angled upwards.

Don't get me wrong, it's a really good amp, and I'm happy with the sound, just wondered if my hiss levels were normal.

It seems the more I turn the treble up, the worse it gets, so I keep the treble low.

Thanks for all of your input. Does anyone have an opinion on the onboard compressor? How does it compare to a Dyna-Comp?

You know, if you don't need all the bells and whistles of scarface here, the new Super Champ XD has a ton of 6V6 awesomeness going for it all for $550 less. Just sayin'....

I hadn't heard of the Super Champ XD until today. Doesn't look like MF is carrying it, but zzounds.com is. Both the Super Champ and Vibro Champ are part of the Vintage Modified series of amps that also includes the 1-knob Champ. I wonder if they will add others

You're right, it looks like I could get what I need for quite a bit less $$$.

Most of what the PR offers is built into any stock DAW on a PC. The SCDX even adds the excellent modeling from the FM 25/65 DSP series that we heard Shane play on YouTube. Oops, DON'T CALL IT MODELING!!! Fender prefers "emulation" or just amp tones.

For recording and PA, it's not clear if the SCDX line out has any speaker emulation like the PR has. That would be ideal.

Just another quick one on this.
I use an external pedal board, which has my Boss NS2, Tuner, Keelet COmpressor, RAT and BOss Chorus.

Should I connect via the effects loop of the Princeton Recording AMp, or just run a lead into the pedals and out into the amp input???

Cheers
Scott

What did you go with and do you still have it?

I really like the Princetons.
