I have only owned two amps in my life. The first was a Sunn Sceptre that I bought new in 1970. I stupidly sold that in '72, and now have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe that I bought slightly used in 2004 from Sam Ash when I bought a new American Strat sunburst. I don't remember much about the Sunn except that it was very loud and clean. The HRD hums like crazy and makes all kinds of strange noises that I don't understand. I took it back and they ran it for 3 days but said it was fine, so I guess it is just something I am not used to. I only play at home, so this is not a gig issue, which may be the reason for all the strange noises.

Do others have this issue with the HRD amp? Other than that, it seems to be OK, but it sure seems noiser than the Sunn was in the old days.

Last question--in the old days, to get the nice sustain--well, that's what we called it--when playing blues, we turned the amp up louder. These days there are so many effects available that I want to get one that gives me the same sustain--notes holding smoothly from one to the other with one of the newer effects devices. Given my setup--HRD and Strat--and that I play at home, not in a big hall, what effects device do people suggest? Thanks for any and all help and comments.

Hey Rich,

I use the MXR super comp. It does the job. http://www.guitarcenter.com/MXR-M-132-Super-Comp-Compressor-Pedal-101822963-i1124442.gc

I have almost the same amp as you... the Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 The pedal works very well with it.

Many thanks to both of you1 I now have an entire world of reference material to look at. I am very pleased that there are guys out there like you to help us out. Not being in a group really hampers my ability to figure out these kinds of things, and it is so helpful to be plugged in to a site like this and have helpful people around.

Thanks!

Richard

Rich, I forgot to say before that we have probably all done some goofy things. I sound a lot like you....

Back in high school, I had a late 60's Fender Bassman amp and a 1965 Fender Mustang I bought second hand..... sometime around 1978 or 79 I sold it for almost nothing. To this day I kick myself every time I think about it. :x

take care,
Keith

I have a HRD and a 2008 American standard strat. I play through a Boss CS-3 along with a CE5 and really love the sound. i want to add a digital delay but may wait and check out the new Deluxe VM first as it appears to have all the features I want .

Thanks guys. Keith, just to make the story worse in my particular case, I purchased the Sceptre for 400.00 new in Charlottle, NC, which was the closest store that handled Sunn to my location (Chapel Hill), and the tax was 12.00. I still have the receipt! He threw in the covers for both items for cash payment. Now the bad part. I had bought a second hand guitar for $100 from another guy. I was an orange w/gold fittings Chet Atkins Gretsch in perfect shape. Sold it for $200 a couple of years later and thought I got a great deal! I think they go for about 10 grand today...and the amps sell for at least a thousand from what I have seen. Oh, well, live and learn, I guess. I hear you on your gear, too. Growing older and wiser, aren't we?

I loved my hot rod deluxe, but finally had to sell it. I gig pretty often and it was getting to be a bear to carry it around. For the money, you couldn't beat it. I ened up buying a JazzKat amp, only 18 lbs. Sounds good, not as good as my hot rod deluxe, but it saved my back and shoulder.

Rich,
I also had a Sunn Sceptre in the 70's and sold it. It was a beast and in a good way. The 4x12 cabinet was huge and heavy. I should have just bought a smaller cabinet. I also own a Hot Rod Deluxe. Nothing like the Sunn by any stretch of the imagination. I've had tons of issues with my HRDlx and it has been in the shop several times since it was new. I went back to gigging with my 76 Twin as much as possible because of the HRDlx's reliability issues.
They don't make em like they used to that's for sure. I'm either going to build a Deluxe 5e3 or possibly get a used Deluxe Reverb Reissue or an Ampeg J20.

Pedals are a matter of taste. I like the old analog stuff. I still have an old Fender Fuzz Wah. I love the distortion this thing dishes out. I have some old Electro Harmonix stuff too. I still really prefer natural tube distortion from a lower wattage tube amp the best.
Welcome and good luck on your quest.
