for a clean low bass tone, with the drive channels off, try treble around 6 or 7, bass 4 ish, mid at 8 or 9, reverb maybe 2 or 3 to your liking. I like that setup on my strat using the middle pickup. Its a pretty warm and rich tone. Though I have a Hod Rod Deluxe, not a deville. But, they are similar amps. That's just my two cents.

I, too, just purchased a Deville 4X10 and am a neophite with tube amps. I just love the sound of the amp with all of my guitars but was having trouble understanding and regulating the settings with the knobs.
I read and talked to Fender Tube amp aficianados about the Fender "Magic 6" setup <http://www.singlecoil.com/docs/magic-six.pdf >but a Deville can barely get up to a 2 volume without tearing the house down. So I heard about the omnisonic tube amp volume control and picked one up on ebay. It enables me to control the volume and I can set up the Magic 6 and it sounds great! It is well worth even more than the $25.00 (including shipping) that I paid. The omnisonic is marketed by the person who makes it and he is great with emailing me right back to answer my "newbie" question.

I guess if you start at the Magic 6 you can adjust from there and I would highly recommend the omnisonic.

The "Magic 6" is a starting place, but it's not going to give you the impact that it's name implies. This is b/c the Magic 6 is specifically dealing with Blackface-style Fenders, whereas the Hot Rods' circuits are derrived from Tweeds. In other words, they're different.

If you want a lower bass sound, don't be afraid to cut the bass down to 2 or 3. Not only is the Deville a bassy amp (it's derrived from the Bassman, after all), but the way the mid-range control is wired actually introduces some bass frequencies as you turn it up. This is another differnce to the Blackfaces (specifically the Twin Reverb). In general though, just play around with it. Changing the tubes will also help play with the frequency response. I use a Tung Sol 12AX7 in V1, and it is very smooth and balanced across all frequencies, whereas the JJ ECC83 (same thing as a 12AX7) sounds a little darker, and the Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 sounds much more trebly.

Hope this helps. Also, enjoy the Deville - it's an awesome amp.

I am definitely enjoying the Deville and thanks for the amp and tube advice as well! I am playing around with the settings. It is awesome!

Hmm...first time I've heard of this Magic 6 thing.
So I went out and tried it on my '65 Princeton RI, sounds good.
On an old 22 watt Deluxe, again sounds nice.
I was going to try it on a Twin Reverb, but I started to fear for my windows before I got close to 6 on the volume!
On my Hot Rod Deluxe I put the Gain at 6 and dialed the Master for comfort, left the rest of the controls as instructed...sounded really nice.
I can only conclude that the Magic 6 is a nice starting point for alot of Fender, or Fender-style amps. It will probably work on a Twin Reverb as well, once you get the proper noise permits!

I think the idea is that 6 is the volume setting where you start getting saturation on the clean channel - if you can bear it!

This link was given to me here and takes you to an excellent review of how to get the best out of your Hot Rod or other tube amp.

I have the 410 and its generally on Volume 3-4, Drive just past 7, Treble 8, Bass just past 9, Mids 9, Master to taste and ears!, Reverb 2-3 and Presence 8.
Usually Telecasters with HB's at the neck goin through.

Are those Omnisonic things really worth it?
