Hi - searched all over the 'net, been reading like crazy. There's lots of info about taming the beast, but what I wanna know is:

Why is the 410 Deville so loud on 2? I'm interested in the actual technical reason. What is it about the design/construction of this amp that causes it to be practically unusably loud so low on the dial? I have plenty of amps, and some are louder than this one, but at least I have to turn them up to get there. In fact, on 9 the Deville is not that much louder (distorted, yes) than it is on 2 - why?

If you know, and can answer me, thanks!

From what I have read, it is that Fender uses linear potentiometers to control the volume. There is a post on this issue, with a topic line something like "C'mon Fender.....help us out here"

Thanks - I have read elsewhere that the drive channel uses a linear pot, but the clean channel has an audio taper pot. Of course, the drive channel has two controls, so it's not as difficult to work out, but the clean channel is a problem. It definitely behaves like a linear pot - but I've read that it's not. Anyone know? I really don't feel like removing it just to find out.

I have the amp running a 5814 in V1. It's a usable amp this way, and still way loud enough. There's really no dirt in the drive, though, so a pedal is employed in front. There's clean, drive which is just volume boost, and the pedal. It makes for a fine amp that way, I just never feel good about an amp that has to be worked around.

I wish I could just simply fix it, cause it just ain't right. I have had Mesa's that behaved like this too, and frankly, I can't stand 'em. I have plenty of amps whose volume controls actually work.
