Hi folks,

I'm the proud owner of a new Blues Jr. and I love the tone!

I'm new to tube amps and am a relatively new player. I have a question about finding that setting where I can play relatively cleanly but that distorts just right when I dig into the strings. I've tried various settings but can't seem to get it. Either there is too much distortion initially or not enough when I dig in.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Happy Holidays

jrc

Hi JRC, welcome to the forums.
My experience of the 'sweet spot' is that its found on the master volume. The gain on master volume amps is adjustable to a point so its not really relevant to the sound your after. The power-amp compression/gain is only found on the master volume control though.
Blues juniors are biased hot so you may find it with the master on 6 and the gain as low as 3 or 4. Adding a fair ammount of middle can help too.

Niki, I seem to remember an earlier post that you weren't to happy with your Blues Jr. and was planning on doing a mod on it. Did you do any mods and are you satisfied with the amp?

Hi jrc127, here's what I do, turn the BJ and let it heat up for about fifteen minutes, then I go for my current prefered setting which is:

reverb--------4
master-------3
middle--------8
bass----------8
treble---------8
volume-------4
fat switch----off

Works for me. You also could do a search in CAFeather's posts. He already gave us some good infos about his BJ settings. Good luck and keep us informed.

Claude.

Fhop,
I did the mid pot mod as per Billm's webpage and its a lot better. Im just too use to marshalls. If you want less middle on a marshall you can just turn the bass and treble up, and it scoops a bit more. The controls are interactive. The BJ seems almost 'active' in that bass mid and treb dont interact with each other.

Im just trying to find a way to boost the reverb now. The amps a 98 MIA. pre 2001 they suffered problems with muddiness and all sorts.

Still it will keep me busy till work picks up again :D

I got a Blues Jr today and also noticed some distortion. I tried Claudes settings and it helped but I was using a guitar with Texas Specials and notice the distortion comes back if the tone is set too low. I was using the middle and neck pups but when I went to middle and bridge it got clean again.

I found out what the distortion was from. A few tubes must have shifted during shipping. I straightened them out and the amp sounds much better.
