I have a Fender Deville that distorts at low volumes. I found a 12ax7 tube was microphonic so I changed it out with the same result. I then traded tubes and found that whatever tube was installed in the location furthest from the power tubes would become microphonic. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Would the socket be the issue, and if so is it easy to change out or do I need to take it in? Thanks!

I have the same amp and whenever mine goes its also the one furthest away. I have been using the EH-12ax7 there and the problem has gone. Also do you still have the foam that coats the first 2 preamp tubes? This helps and is essential to stopping microphony.

As for the early distortion, what power tubes did you install?

Thanks for the reply. I do not have the foam for the tubes, I bought it used and it wasn't there. I can hold the tubes and strike a note with the same result, so I am not sure if they would help me here. The power tubes are 6L6 Groove tubes. I was thinking of changing out all of the tubes since I bought it used, but I think they are all still in good shape. The distortion noise is similiar to string buzz.

Sounds like the power tube is either bad or biased incorrectly/too cold

Preamp tubes generally last a long time compared to power tubes. Preamp tube problems will sound the same loud or quite, while power amp tubes manifest their problems in a number of ways. If the problem is there at low volumes and just gets louder when you turn it up, its probably a preamp tube. If the problem does not happen at low volumes but starts to manifest itself as you turn it up, its probably a power tube. If it blows fuses, its generally a power tube

Check the power tube

Try The Electro Harmonix EH12AX7 Preamp tubes as well though. They don't cost much and do the job. Hope you locate your gremlin.

If the tubes don't solve the problem and I doubt they will, find yourself a good Fender tech.

I had a similar problem with mine and after a complete tube change and several other wild goose chases I called a Fender tech who said "I know exactly what it is, I fix those all the time".

it was a small handfull of tiny 1/2 watt grid resistors that get burned up with surges from the preamp tubes, he replaces them with one watt resistors and the noise goes away, mine shimmers like never before after the fairly inexpensive operation.

I spent a couple of months going crazy with tubes, speakers and wiring all for nothing.
