to mike a low-wattage amp (say 15) for live playing or turn the volume down REALLY low on a higher-wattage (between 40-85) amp for bedroom use...?

in terms of sound quality and usability.

Difference in 15 watts to 40 watts driven into the same speaker type is not much in the way of SPL (Sound Pressure Level)
Maybe 2 decibels at most,. It takes 10 decibels (1 bel) to sound twice as loud.
