I'm anxious to see the responses to this post as well.

This is my first tube amp, and I'm pretty much standing here without a clue...

But God does it sound great. Still don't know if running it through a 4X12 will give me enough jiuce to play over a drummer, but the sound is awesome.

Oh yeah... so what about the tubes?

I'm using NOS tubes from the 60's. I am using a 5751 in V-1.

Hi - I have owned a Fender Blues Jr since they first came out, mine is a 1996 tweed, and have followed lots of forums on Fender amps since the late 90's. The general consensus for tubes in the Blues JR appears to be as followed:

- JJ ECC83-S/12AX7 for pre amp tubes. Some prefer Electro Harmonix 12AX7s, others go for JJ's. It's all a matter of personal taste.
If you need extra clean headroom put a 12AY7 in V1, and keep the 12AX7 in V2 and V3. V1 is where you will hear the most noticeable difference, so some folks pay higher price in the $25 and plus range for NOS (New Old Stock) or reissue 12XA7 pre-amp tubes for the V1 position.

- JJ EL84 power tubes. Many converted to JJ EL84 and never went back.

Since we're on a mod discussion, the Jensen C12N is a very popular choice for the stock speaker upgrade.

I agree about the tube selection. A 5751 or a Sovtek 12AX7LPS is also a nice choice for V1.

I'm not so sold on the C12N. I think there are many better speakers for the price. It depends on your music and tone goals, but I think the speaker should be the last thing you change--to give the amp the final push towards your tone goals. The main things the Blues Junior needs are the tone stack mod and power supply stiffening. The difference in tone quality is significant.

Quality NOS tubes are the best.

As I have mentioned before I turned my Blues Jr into a 2x12 combo. The speakers I chose are Scumbacks from www.southbayampworks.com They are Pre-Rola Celestion Clones and sound absolutely vintage!!!!!!!!
