PostPosted: 26 Dec 2008 00:00 Post subject: Mods I've done with EXCELLENT Results

Was that Tone Tubby an easy fit then? didnt have to do anything else but put it in I mean? The couple sites I visited seemed to think that they were great sound wise. They are new to me,I was thinking my option was to be the Cajun, but just to be adventures I would give the Tubby a whirl
Now that Avatar 212H,has that got the Tubbys in it also?
The output transformer is interesting also.I think I remember reading about the "Dick Dale"transformer that Leo made for Dick's amps back in the day because Dick was burning up his Fender Amps, and it said that these did make a sound change
I really am diggin this amp,but I feel that it could be better tweaked
Did your mods thicken up any of the distortion voice's?They seem to sound a bit thin to me,,My elcheapo stomp box into the 1st channel gives me a fairly good distortion

Tone Tubby install was a straight swap. It was a tight fit, it's massive magnet fits snug against the tube cage with no extra room. Side note: You WILL have to dramatically change your tone EQ. A 5 setting on the bass with this speaker is the equivalent of a 10 setting with the stock speaker. Treble is similarly effected. As an example When playing AC/DC on setting 8 Gain at about a 4, I roll off the bass to 1 and treble to 4 and it nails the tone.

As far as the distortion goes this thing is a snarling beast! Setting 8 sounds exactly like a Marshall half stack. Clear and crisp and crunchy. Gain at 4 and main volume at about a 3 is so loud it can be painful in a practice environment. Cleans up excellent with guitar volume control. These mods also make the other settings come alive. 1-3 Tweed sounds are spot on!! (Did an A/B with a 57 Deluxe re-issue) 4-6 Black face are excellent with subtle but noticable differences from the clean channel very tight with creamy distortion when pushed. The Hot Rod and Metal settings are all very tonally distinct and will melt your face off! I would not at all feel intimidated playing metal with this next to some brain melting stack. All very usable WITHOUT stomp boxes. However if you do add a Fulldrive 2 Mosfet, the results are astounding. Sweet violin like sustain for days.

Like any amp set up there isn't one that is absolutely perfect. However this has come as close as any I have tried in over 30 years. The main thing is that TONE. Not just one but many! This is where it shines compared to other boutique amps. Although you can get killer tone with just about any of them it is narrow in focus. With the SCXD Modded in this way you get that sweet boutique sound as a base, but the onboard modeling makes it a tone chameleon. It's main weakness is the effects although usable they are not great. Perfect for practice but in a professional setting (recording) their weaknesses come to the forefront. To me this is not a concern. Tube driven spring reverb just cannot be duplicated electronically, but you can add on what you want with quality stomp boxes.

This bring out the last thing that I would like to mod with this little jewel to achieve nirvana. As soon as money permits, I intend on adding 2 additional mods. First an effects loop and then a provision to use the built in speaker simultaneously with the extension cabinet. I will report on that when I get it done. Without question this is the amp I have searched for my entire life.

sorry if this sounds noobish, but does the gain do anything for channel one.

I know it's the preamp volume for Channel 2 but I find that almost nothing happens on channel one.

Thanks.

the gain is just for the "voices" side of the amp,,,
i kinda thought about that too,it may be cool to have it work on both sides, but it dosent.

I went to my local Fender dealer this past summer to try this amp with my Strat. It was brand new with the tags still on it and hadn't been demo-ed yet. It would not fire up! I was fooling with it for over 10 minutes before the store owner noticed nothing was coming out of my Strat. He couldn't get any sound out of it even though it was lit up.
I ended up trying the smaller 5 watt Junior Super Champ but that sounded horrible, (like most small amps do). The good thing was I did get a promotional Fender Shine A Light - Rolling Stones tee shirt for testing their gear!

I would really like to give the Super Champ XD another try. I like the warmth of a tube amp and the added effects. This one is not too expensive. Musician's Friend has them for $299.00 and they are throwing in a $50 Fender guitar cable with the deal. My "vintage" Crate GX-20 is 20 watts. I really wanted more guts than that but I'm thinking the 15 watts on the Super Champ might be even more powerful due to the advanced design.

I've got one I'd like to sell... mint condition about 8 months old... first $225 takes it! It's a great sounding amp but I'm going to get a non-modelling amp since I use a POD X3 Live for modelling.

I bought one a few months ago and it has been perfect so far. No mods done to it and it has many great sounds to choose from. Half the time I don't even hook up my pedal board.

I bought a Super Champ XD three weeks ago and I love it. Jammed with it in my band and we have a loud drummer, it held it's own and sounded great. A local store had another for 250.00 So I went and got it and run them in stereo, the result was out of this world at our last band practice. I have the best tone I've ever had or ever will IMO. I have two twin 10 cabs loaded with Ragin Cajun's too. I've thought about throwing two of the Cajun's in the Super Camps, but haven't yet. I just feel like why mess with a good thing.
I've hooked the twin 10's up to the amps and they sound great too, with a nice full tone, but I don't really want to carry the dam things around to practice and gigs. I've recorded the Super Champ XD too with a 57 mic up close, and I think the effects sound great recorded. Here's link http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... ID=7227830

Very nice guitar playing, and it sounds great through the SC. Your singer sounds a little like David Bowie. I like it!

I own one and it is my main amp now. From gigging to recording this amp has given me the elusive tone I have been chasing for years. I won't mod it, just keep it as is and jam away. My Marshall and Peavey all collect dust now. This is IMO the best amp you can buy for the money!

I've had my scxd for almost a year now. I haven't swapped out the speaker but I play it through a 1x12 closed back speaker cab with an Emenance Texas Heat. For me this setup sounds awesome. I get that nice clean Fender sound with a nice bottem end.

This really is a nice amp for all types of music. I'm really learning this now by learning different types of music for a new band I'm playing with. I'm nailing all types of tones with my Strat and my Explorer.

I guess the only problem I have is with the Fender channel selector/effects pedal. It just doesn't seem to switch the a/b channels very fast. So for a few songs I need to use a distortion pedal because it switches from clean to distortion faster. But its totally worth it for how great this thing sounds.

I've had mine since March. My wife bought it for me for my Birthday. I LOVE IT!, and I love her too.

I thought about changing the speaker, but I'm going to leave it in. It seems to be breaking in nicely and I love the sound, so why change. My favorite setting is clean channel, it just so pure. My fav voice is in the Tweed areas with a little reverb. No peddles into it, just straight Strat.

It is pretty loud in my opinion. I have rarely had the volume at or above 3 as I live in a condo. The few times it's ventured out, it has been cranked, and sounded so sweet.

Love it and would recommend it to anybody.

Here it is behind my Strat.

And here's a better picture with the guitar in the rack.
