What's the opinion of this amp and modifications. I have seen the Mercury Magnetics kit, but it is more expensive than the amp itself. Others have talked of replacing the speaker, output transformer, & tubes.

Curious what you guys & gals think could be done to improve the tone; I'm primarily interested in playing blues.

Put in a good pre-amp tube asap, the Chinese one is crap.
The output tube is a Electro-Harmonix and is good.
Break the speaker in, a few weeks of playing will make it sound better.
You can always replace it with a Weber or Jensen speaker.
How is the hum on your Champ?

It has no hum what so ever. On another forum; this mod was reccomended.

I would not attempt this, but would have it done by someone with some who has the no how.

hey i just wrote a post on the MM champ upgrade kit

just got it back this morning after weeks at the amp tech!

the volume is a lot lot louder with the mod...

(i had mine done without the extra gain added in...i have a ts808 so that will add the boost when i want it)

but it sounds noticeably better...
its expensive though...i paid $200/amp and $500/parts and labor...

so there are other amps in that price range that might suit you better...but i knew that when i bought this amp i was going to keep it...so that is why i chose to do the upgrade v. buying another kind of amp...

Imo this amp needs no mods.
Only a good 12AX7/ECC83 pre-amp tube and perhaps a Weber
Alnico speaker. For home use it's loud enough and not at all tiny
sounding.

I just picked up a Champ 600 at Guitar Center new. The 12AX7 tube is Electro-Harmonix brand. Does anyone know if this is the stock tube for that amp? Thanks.
