I have a Hot Rod Deluxe that was made in 1996. The speaker is labeled as specialy designed for Fender by Eminence. Does anybody know if this is the same speaker that is being used in the new HRDLx's? I personally think the amp sounds great, at least now that I have changed out the tubes and set the bias. What sort of tone differences would I get if I switched the original speaker for a Celestion Vintage 30 like they put in the special edition HRDLx amps?

Thanks!

Hmm. I have a 2003 HR Dlx that came stock with a jensen C12N. Ive seen new HR Dlxs with other special made jensens, but currently I've also seen eminence. About the vintage 30, I'd say its a safe bet it would definitely give you an amazing tone. The vintage 30s have good high mids and lows rather than specializing in one or two of those three. Heres what celestion says about it:

I'm also looking to replace my speaker, which is still the original and is long overdue for a replacement. Im looking at a jensen P12N which ive seen in deluxe reverbs. Supposed to be a pretty good speaker. I also considered the vintage 30. But I dont know, I just have this stigma that jensen is a nice compliment to a fender amp.

I ended up replacing the stock speaker with an Eminence Canibas Rex and WOW what a difference. It came down to the Rex and the Private Jack, but I decided to keep my American made amp American (Tone wise), although the Private Jack is an amazing speaker. I would love to try the two of them together in a 2X12 combo! The Rex gives me tighter low end with more mid range punch while keeping that bell like blackface tone we all love, and it is so smooth. I know there are tons of great speaker upgrades out there for this amp, but if you are considering changing, you owe it to yourself to check out the Cannibas Rex and the Private Jack. To my ear, the biggest difference between the two is that the Rex gives a more bell like tone while the Jack gives a more shimmering tone. Bottom line, you couldn't go wrong either way.

I have replaced the tubes in my amp with JJ tubes and the speaker as mentioned above. My brother in law was here for the holidays and he couldn't get over how much better my amp sounded. Both are great easy, low cost ugrades for the HRDLx.

nice, im actually intrigued. how much is the rex? by mid range punch, is it forceful or just thickens it up. I mean, does it compromise the pristine pure cleans fenders are good for? have you heard anything about the jensen P12N? I'll be in touch with you as a get closer to replacing the speaker. I have to find someone to buy my old amp first. :)

I got the Rex for $79.99. I would say that it thickens up the mid-range response, but it definately maintains that clean Fender tone. From what I have heard, the Jensen P12N is good speaker, I believe Fender uses it in some of the Reissue amps, the Twin Reverb maybe? It costs about three times as much, due to the alnico magnet, but should give you great vintage Fender tone.

Check out the Eminence web page www.eminence.com, they have sound bites of all of their speakers for comparison. You could also check out Harmony Central, they do a lot of user reviews which will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Yea, I checked out the website after your last post. I'm definitely impressed. That definitely makes me feel better now. The three most reputable speaker companies in my mind are Celestion, Jensen and Eminence. I just didn't know anything about specific eminence amps like I do with the other two companies.

I must say, I am a fan of the cannabis for sure. They have amazing reviews. I also checked out the private jack, not really a big fan. Compared to the cannabis it doesn't sound as pure and clear. I also checked out the wizard. I like it as well. Seems like its even more pure than the cannabis, but the cannabis just has this heavenly fuller tone. As of now, I'm sold on it.

I don't think that you can go wrong with the Cannibas Rex in a HRDLx. As mine is breaking in it is just getting sweeter and sweeter. Just tons of clean, full, articulate, warm, bell like Fender tone! Good luck with your search, let me know what you end up with?
