I am wanting to purchase tubes to replace my tubes in my Fender Blues Junior NOS. It may be helpful to first describe the tone I aim for. First and foremost clean I prefer to drive my power tubes over my preamp tubes. The tubes that came in my amp are good but I have nothing to compare them to.

If interested here is a sound clip aimed for. Solo tone is what I am looking for. Solo Starts at 2:45

I have been told that true NOS tubes are the way to go at least for preamp tubes. Money is not a huge factor I have problem spending a hundred or so but I can not put $600 tubes into my $400 amp ya know. Anyways I was looking at these:

For power tubes:

For pre-amp tubes:

Any info is helpful!

a stab in the dark, probably wrong but a potential suggestion could be a fender bassman ri. i wouldn't entirely trust my suggestion as im hung over and have had too much coffee but my mate has a new zealand jansen fender bassman copy which acturly sounds realy good, better than hot rods and it sounds similar to it. anyway this is just a point in a direction to starts somewhere to find ur tone. excuse the spelling. hmmm what to add for a bit of life to this post?...

Thank you for your suggestion but I am sticking with my Blues Junior. I was just looking for tube suggestions.

I just played a couple of Juniors today. One was the stock and the other was the Texas Red. The sound good. I would replace the stock speaker in the standard amp. As for the tone on the JM song. I think you could get close to that with turning down the tone on your guitar. I've come to realize that it's almost impossible to get the exact tones from songs. Have you heard that song live? Does it sound the same? I would try turning down your tone on your guitar as well as trying some distortion. Maybe it's just my ears. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah. I've head that Tung Sol tubes are the way to go.

Try replacing the 12AX7's with 5751's. They are not a 12AX7 a variation from what I've read but have 70% the gain of a 12AX7 and fit in the slot. I prefer Jan-Phillips from http://www.thetubestore.com. The 5751's will give yo a SRV type of tone which is what John Mayer is probable after.

Don't replace the 12AX7 with a lower gain preamp tube. I just pulled 12AT7 preamp tubes out of my HRDLx, the 12AT7's have about 70% of the gain of the 12AX7 as well and they were dull and lifeless. I replaced my tubes with JJ 6L6GC power tubes and JJ ECC83s preamp tubes and I can get really close to that sound without much effort. I would suggest changing the tubes before changing amps or even speakers. You should be able to get that tone with the JJ's.

For what it's worth I just replaced the tubes in my BJ Tweed amp. I relied upon the advice of a respected guitar/amp repair shop. I went with Tung-Sol 12AX7's and Groove Tube EL84R's with a rating of 4-7. For a cleaner sound you could probably go with the EL84S.

Darren is a great guy who knows his stuff. You might want to give him a call.
