The 57 Tweed Deluxe is only 13 watts. A Tweed Champ clone can get you close. My Silverface Champ is even close at 6 watts when you crank it.

supro,

wouldnt i still need to get the deluxe pretty loud to break up (I could see not as loud as the twin, certainly, but still pretty loud for home).

I have to be honest - I am so tempted to bring the 57 twin or 57 deluxe home (possibly with that airbrake) and see if i could somehow make it work....

other than the obvious wattage difference, any thoughts on the twin vs. deluxe? is it really same tone just varying power? would the deluxe be just as close to clapton (minus the skill, obviously)?

No not really. Heres a demo of the Deluxe. Shane explains it.

Tweeds are really different from a lot of amps. Will you sound like Clapton?
Probably not. No one will. There's a lot more to it than equipment.

Either amp will be amazing and pretty expensive. You can buy tweed clone kits that are pretty nice and a lot less expensive.

supro,

Im at work and havent been able to watch the whole clip but it looks like it will be quite informative...do you happen to know of one tht covers the '57 tweed twin off the top of your head?

when i was asking if similar, i meant is the tweed twin similar in tone to the tweed deluxe (recognizing that they are both tweeds and would be quite different than other non-tweeds).

it kind of seems like all things being equal, the deluxe would be the more practical f the two given my situation (and, perhaps, even the deluxe might still not be good for home)
thanks

Try this one for the Twin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfLU2W0NTl4

The Twin will be a lot louder and a bit fuller because of the two 12" speakers.
It will move a lot more air.

thanks supro.

so based on above, i guess you would definitely say deluxe for home? I think i might also try an attunator. i might try the Hotplate and Airbrake to see which may work better. Am i correct in thinking the Deluxe would need an 8ohm hotplate model?

actually, for that matter, which Hotplate ohm would i need if i tried a twin because the specs on a twin say 4ohm output and impedence but 8ohm speakers?

obviously, i know nothing about electronic devices!

Try the amp first. I've never liked the way attenuators messed with the tone of the amp.

let me come from a little different angle. is it possible to play thru the twin and/or deluxe at low volumes, even clean (i.e. if i wasnt worried about overdriving the amp)?

you would think the obvious answer would be 'yes' but i have played on amps before that were so loud that even playing clean you were very close to 0 on the volume knob and even the slightest movement of the knob led to a huge jump in volume.

if i could play them clean at low volumes, one option would be using an OD pedal when i need to quiet it down.

what do you think?

thanks

You only get that big jump in the Hot Rod series, not in the more professional amps. They use the wrong pots in them to make you think the amp is a lot louder than it really is.

For me the whole purpose of having a Tweed or low wattage anything is for the pure tone and natural distortion. Sure you can drive either one with a pedal, the choice is yours.

The new Princeton is a low wattage amp too. I still feel it's overpriced for what it is, but it sounds great.

You need to go out and try some amps to see what you think you need.
I practice a lot with my 74 Champ. I keep it on 10 and control the volume with my guitar. I had tons of pedals way back, now it's just a cord and a low wattage amp. One of the only newer boxes I liked was an Elactro Harmonix English Muffin. It's tube driven and sounds a lot more natural to me.
