Today i dug out some old ecc83's. 2 brimars, 1 FG and one no-name from a old sound city PA. I then thought i'd try em out in the vibrochamp as theres only 1 pre-amp valve. I thought it must be a phase inverter, but would suffice to check for bad valves without having to load 5 valves into my marshall, then test em for noise and microphonics.
I was completely suprised by how much of a difference they made to the sound. I was pretty sure the ecc83 in the vibrochamp was a phase inverter but now i'm not so sure. One of the brimars and the FG gave a really squashy high level of compression even at low volume, very akin to a champ maxed out, even the blackface settings had a fat bass end despite the 8" speaker.
Was i wrong about the phase inverter? Do single ended amps need a inverter? Is the ecc83 a gain valve controled by the dsp chip?

Single ended amps need not a p/i. If grasshopper talking vibro champ xd, valve just pre-amplifier behind digital effects unit. 1/2 valve used only. V1A not used.

ahhh thankyou master.

So presumably its possible to bypass the effects section or even have it swith-on-switch-off-able.

Need fancy switch to take signal from digital effects input to tube input. Gain low, only 1/2 preamp tube to power amp. Need to liven up 2nd half of valve. Do-able yes, Practical ?.
