Tweaking the old Blues Deville again & again !!!!!

just wondering if any of the Fender locals here have tried the 5751 or 12AT7 V-1 swaps ?????

Did you have to go after the V-2 or V-3 to get what you wanted or was the first stage enough ?

I use tungsol's in my marshall 800s. They are a little too crisp but clean em up nicely. In my experience use a ecc81 or 82 in v1 a fat 83 (groove tube T rated are my choice) in V2 for good eq and anything thats nowhere near microphonic in V3 for the phase inverter. Use 83's for reverb and effects loops too if you've a 5 preamp valve amp. again i go with the groove tubes T rated ones in possitions 4&5.

I use a 5751 in V-1 in my Blues Jr. No changes to any other tubes.

thanks for the replies.

I am going to go with the 12AT7 in V-1 as soon as I get a few to try.

I know it is a big step and I can see myself trying the 5751 option also.

These amps have so much to offer as far as a great clean tone, I sure hope I can get mine where I want it.

In the Blues Deluxe RI my first swap was to a Ruby Tubes 12AX7 in v1,
the amps hiss with no signal became much lower.
Seems the SoveTek tubes are a bit on the noisy side.

As soon as the package shows up from Tube Depot I am swapping to
Jan Philips 5851 in v1
Ruby Tubes 12AX7 in V2
JJ/Tesla 12AT7 in V3

Will see how it goes, this swap may clean up the amp too much.

Swapping to better power tubes will come next, but I am not quite up to doing the biasing myself yet.

Isn't it a very clean preamp signal that we really want anyway ?????

If we push the amps front end into distortion, it is not the sweet overtones we get but a dirty signal that is then amplified over by the power section, right ????

I dont want to hear any distortion untill my volume knob gets past six or more.

I do think a squeeky clean twin would work as a better platform for what I'm aiming for, but at the same time I love the warmth of the 4x10 Fenders.
