So I just started playing and I'm looking for a good amp to play at home. I'm mostly interested in classic rock, blues and jazz. Mostly clean tones but I like the ability to adjust different effects for the occasional heavy distortion eighties metal sound. I've looked at the G-dec, Vox valvetronix, Spider jam and just came across the Super Champ. My questions are:

1) How often would the tubes need to be changed and is it difficult to do?

2) Can you use more than 1 effect at a time?

3) Is there a headphone jack?

4) Is 15 watts enough for home?

5) Any complaints?

Sorry if some of these questions are goofy, I've just never bought a new amp before.

I have had a SuperChamp for 3 or 4 months now and I really like it. As to your questions..

1. I do not know.
2. There are some built in effects combinations i.e. reverb + delay, that you can use. But you cannot otherwise use more than effect at a time.
3. There is not a headphone jack.
4. 15 watts will rattle your walls, I guarantee it.
5. I don't know of any other complaints. If you look through the threads, there have been a couple of other negative comments - but I don't have any.

You can play on the tubes for a long time before they go but sometimes they need to be replaced surprisingly early. I think it has a lot to do with how much you move them when they are hot but that's just a theory of mine.

The Reverb and Chorus effects have a notch that include delay (on Reverb) and reverb or delay or both (on Chorus). If you are really into effects this amp will not blow you away but since you are just starting out most likely it will get you pretty far along before you start looking for some more flexibility. You will probably get a lot more out of exploring the left and right hands and learning how to move around in different scales than in trying to dial in the perfect chorus setting anyways.

The amp has a nice clean channel so 15 watts will be fine and you won't get a Mesa Boogie effect if you turn it up pretty loud. That's probably the biggest complaint with a lot of low wattage amps - you can't really get a clean sound if you crank it up but this amp will let you do that just fine. On the other hand, you can switch to channel 2 and get a sound like you would with an amp turned way up with lots of crunch but without shaking your walls down (it will be loud if you want it to, though). If by "enough" you mean "Loud" I would say you might not be the loudest guy in a small room filled with drums. Other than that you will probably be happy with the volume you can get.

Only complaint I have is that it is impossible to get a footswitch to change the channels but since I like the clean channel with a tubescreamer it isn't really a big deal.

On the whole, this is one of the best practice amps and it is a great way to get started since it has so many features (even if they are a bit limited) to learn with and to explore. You can almost get any sound you want from a country twang to an AC/DC growl to metal. One day you will plug into a Twin Reverb or a Hot Rod Deluxe and never go back but that is probably a ways off. You'll get your money's worth.

I've had the Vox AD50VT...and it died before it reached 3 years. Not a bad amp though, when it was running. I've never heard a G-Dec that I liked the sound of but that is a personal thing. I just purchased a SuperChamp yesterday and I'm floored at how good it sounds. You have to play around with the controls to adapt the sound to the guitar and your liking but I think it handles humbuckers and single coils just as well. As far as I'm concerned quite a few of the voices sound alike but it has that beautiful Fender clean sound, and that's what I like about it. I ran it through my Traynor YCS50 cab equipped with a Celestion Vintage 30 and it sounded "Bigger" but honestly, I think the stock speaker is pretty damned good as it is! JMO

YOU MAY HAVE REALLY GOOD LUCK WITH TUBES,DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH ITS PLAYED AND DEPENDING ON CONDITIONS ITS PLAYED IN,,TUBES ARE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE TO CHANGE,,IF YOUR NOT CUMMFY DOIN IT LET A REPAIR GUY DO IT,BUT IT IS SIMPLE ENOUGH,MAYBE GOOGLE THE SUBJECT TO LEARN A FEW THINGS BEFORE YOU DO,,,THE SUPER CHAMP IS PLENTY LOUD AT 15 WATTS,,I GIGGED WITH ONE DRUMMER WHO DOSENT HIT EM TO HARD,PLAYS MORE TASTY THEN LOUD,AND IT STOOD ITS OWN,OTHER DRUMMER WHO IS A CLUBBER I HAD TO MIC IT.I THINK ITS A GRREAT RECORDING AMP,GREAT PRACTICE AND SITTIN ROUND NODDELIN AMP....
