I went through several things trying to clean up this at one time very sweet amp, I had re soldered the boards (cracked solder joints), re tubed the whole amp and still at volume level 2 1/2 or more depending on My pick attack I would get ugly distortion.
unfortunately not the pretty harmonic stuff, just garbled up chords.

A local amp tech says He bets it is a blown speaker or two.

I have heard in the past that the Blue Fender 10" speakers in these Devilles and Bassman reissues are prone to go up in smoke.

Well I must say it sounds exactly like what used to happen with my cheap car stereo speakers when I was in School twenty some years ago and a speaker would give up the ghost, that flubbery busteed cone sound.

howevere there is no visable tears ?????

long post I know, anyone else go through this yet ????

I experienced a similiar situation in a Fender Concert amp a long time ago. It turned out to be a short in the wiring from the amp to the speaker terminals. It was not visible, but detected with a meter. Might be worth checking?

Good luck!

Will Do, Thanks Mike.

The wire from the speaker jack to the speakers looks to have been spliced by the last owner.

we just might be on to something, I ordered a new set of speakers, it might have been a bit premature.

Check to be sure the speakers are in phase too.

Then again it only happens when your pick attack gets heavy, and so I cant imagine a short having an impact only under those conditions.

You would think a short would buzz and make noise all of the time.

anyway the new set of speakers is on the way, This amp has been my all time favorite and so i dont mind spending a few bucks to mend her up.

I can't imagine not having my 4x10 sweet tube tones, I've tried a lot of amps looking for a good tone and this one has really been it for a while, I will say it has had a far share of troubles and I've found a few mods and scars from past fixes too, I do hope this is the end of her troubles for a while!!!

She is back and fully operational again !!!!!!!

Sounds better than ever !!!!!

so what was it you might ask ?????

a hand full of 1/2 watt resistors (grid resisters) ? I think is what the tech. said.

He said it is a common problem with the devilles and being a Fender tech knew exactly what the problem was as soon as i described it.

He cleaned the pots and a few other standard clean and check operations and now i have my sweet tone monster back !!!!!!!!!

You got that right !!!!

She sounds so nice !

Now I have to re- dial in my sounds, the pedals and so on.....

I was ready to sell her off and sell off the CT and go hunting for PTP hand wired amp and now that she is back, I'm feeling the love affair return.

Still looking into a vintage PTP like an old champ tweed or blackface or just maybe building a clone.
