Hi,
I am new to the guitar, just starting to learn. I picked up a Squier 51 and now I am looking for a amp. I am on a very limited budget so I have to stay around $100. I have been to the local stores and and have looked at 3 amps. A Fender 15r Frontman, Crate FW15, and a Kustom 12a Tube. Any input on these would be helpful.
Thanks.
David

The squier 51 is a very cool guitar (a bit of a cult hero - check http://www.instituteofnoise.com/squier5 ... efault.asp)

It deserves a good amp! None of the above fall into that category!

If you can stretch to the ultra cool Fender Champion 600 you won't disapointed - it's tube powered (really a must in the world of guitar amps!)
looks fantastic, and will sound great.

Do a google google search - this is what little amps are all about!

Those other amps will leave you disapointed and wanting to part with more money!!

And by the way....don't monkey around with that 51 - I reckon it'll be collectable in the not too distant future. Sounds silly? I butchered my mid 90's Crafted in Japan Silver Series Squier Telecaster beyond all recognition. 15 years later I'm sure I could have sold it for more than I paid for it. More than that though, Felt a bit sad when I last saw it, that I'd robbed it of all it's original charm.

Poor little fella....

what kind of music do you play? for rock I would pick the frontman or possibly that Kustom, it uses a tube..on the other hand, Crate is perfect for louder genders
try FM 25 DSP, has some extra effects and amp simulations

I have you tried any of the Roland Cubes? The Micro Cubes are great with a variety of amp tones, plus effects. You can carry them around on the shoulder strap and play through batteries as well.

If you stick with it and your budget improves in the future, remember that the guitar is only half of the way towards a great sound. A $2,000 guitar will sound rubbish through a cheap amp and a cheap guitar will sound much better through a good amp. I am not trying to be clever, I have spent tons of money on guitars over the years and looked at amps as a necessary evil - got it wrong but now I'm, a believer!

Very true! Great post! Way back I tried to convince my parents that if I decided I didn't want to continue, that they could get all their money back by purchasing higher end equipment in the first place. My Dad, now 80 years young is amazed at the value, my old vintage stuff is worth! This is higher end equipment I purchased during my High School and College years. When I was 10-11 years old they didn't belive me. I joked with my Dad and told him, see if you would have bought all those 50's and 60's guitars and amps I wanted, I could sell some of the stuff and fund your retirement.

That's very true and a great story. I became interested in guitars at about the same age as you, that would have been 1970. I shudder to think what beatiful 50's and 60's equipment must have been out there for the taking. I do have a 79 Strat that I hung on to and still have, but it's not a '62!!

LOL! It was 1966! Fender amps were great, but a Strat was just another guitar with a bunch of screws on top. My teachers all had big Jazz boxes (Gibson Super 400's, L-5's and Gretsch Country Gentlemens) and the Strat looked like a throw away guitar in comparison. Who knew!

Enlighten ... I am enlightened by this because, I was considering an Elcheapo starter Amplifier, but now I really see where that's not a good call... ultimately, I going to take a HIT when I trade it in any way- I think better thinking would be to Suck it up and pay a bit more for a Blues Jr...

Look at one of the new Champs. None of the amps you mentioned will do your guitar any justice. You can make even the cheesiest guitar sound decent with a good amp. A cheap SS amp will make your guitar or any guitar sound crummy. I really doubt if many of the newer guitars will become collectible. There's just too many of them.
