I have a new (2008) cream colored HRD. As I am playing I am hearing what I'll call a slight "harmonic ring". It gets worse the higher the reverb is set but it is detectable even with the reverb off. I've checked the reverb tank and all appears good and secure. It also seems to be more prevalant on certain notes more than others.
Could this sound be coming from a tube?
Any ideas or suggestions?
Other than this, I absolutely love this amp. She sings real pretty.
Thanks,
g_w

Do you have a spare 12ax7 tube?
if so try changing the pre-amp tubes out one at a time.
It is possible one of them might have become a bit microphonic.

Or the issue could be something else altogether :)

Turn your amp on(let it warm up). With guitar cable unplugged, LIGHTLY tap each tube with the end of a pencil or something. Does it make the sound when GENTLY tapping one of the tubes? If so, congratulations, you have a microphonic tube. Replace.

I have a brand new hot rod deluxe thath does this too.. Did it from day one. I have dampners on all tubes and it stil does it. It's one of my power output tubes.

Too much of a hassle for a warranty claim though.

OK, I did the "tap on the tube" test. Found that tapping on the preamp tube on the far right (while facing the back of the amp) sounds like I'm tapping on a microphone that is turned on. The other tubes are quiet when tapped. Is that a microphonic tube?
Now, do I just simply pull that one out and replace that tube only or do I need to replace all the pre amp tubes as a set?
Thanks for the help!

Yep, thats a microphonic tube.
You just need to replace that one 12ax7 preamp tube :).
Get a good tested tube if possible, they can come microphonic straight from the factory.

The power tubes should be done in matched pairs

OK, I switched out a microphonic preamp tube that I found. Now what I am hearing is what sounds like a harmonic note or sound when I am playing. It seems to only be while playing in the 4th thru 8th fret area on the high E and the B strings. Those notes make the sound really prominant. It gets worse when the reverb is on. It tends to diminish when I turn the tone knob on my guitar way down. I ususally run both the volume and tone wide open. Could this be another tube issue?
Thanks,
g_w

Without actually hearing it, it'll be tough. Could still be a bad tube. If you have the original GT's I'd dump them anyway. It could be anything from a bad tube to cone cry. Justin shut his site down then it went to Zshare now it's deleted.
Shoot me an email and I'll send you the zip file. I still have it.

ehm, i still have those stock ones except for got blue labeled power tubes, but all GTs. i kind'a like that sound with my les paul, you know. that trebly harshness would kill strats & teles, but sounds cool with burstbuckers on my lp. so i'd get the same i guess. but. touched tubes with a pencil - 1st one in a row mics. reverb seems totally ok, checked yesterday. dunno, hope it's the tube

if you won't mind, send me that manual to alexanderre AT me.com
thx a lot, mate!
