On Monday I saw a local craig's list posting: Picture of a 60's Fender Twin for $50. I called immediately. The seller was already on her way to meet someone who already called her. I offered her $500. She said she already agreed to sell it for $50. I hung up, called her back 5 minutes later and begged her not to sell it for that price b/c she had no idea what she had or what the value was. She said she already sold it (and the guy tried to talk her down to $25). She asked me how much it was worth. I pulled a few up on Ebay, gasped, then told her I WILL NOT tell her how much they are worth (I didn't want to be responsible for her mojo). We went back and forth: Her: "Pls tell me?" Me: "Seriously lady, I can't be resposible for the way your going to feel for the next few days." Her: "PLease?" So... I told her: "There are some on Ebay right now for $2,100, and some for $3,000. And some even more than that". She was silent for about a minute and a half. Turns out she bought a storage unit, and was cleaning it out. Had NO idea what it was or what it's value was.

Ouch!!!!

But at least you have ethics.

The only time I ever ran across a true steal like that was a woman selling a Guild Starfire III back in around 1988. The model appeared to be circa 1967 - 68 and I'd always dreamed of owning one. But I simply couldn't take it for the $20 she had on it. I told her that I wasn't "very" sure of the value but I could pretty much guarantee it was worth at least $500.

I advised her to take it back in her house until she could find out what it was really worth. Guaranteed a lot more than $20 ... but she decided to re-tag it for the $500 I'd mentioned. Told me that if it still wasn't sold by the next day (Sunday) when she packed up her sale, she'd sell it to me for $400 as a reward for my honesty.

Of course I knew it would be gone and it was. What hurt was when she told me that a "nice man" told her that old guitars really aren't worth that much usually" ... and she took the $130 he offered because it was "all he had and he was hoping to get a guitar for his special needs son."

Maybe ... but I had a hard time believing that. Sounded like a sleaze dealer tactic to me.

Hello Adcurium,

Here is another true story.

About 25 years back a friend of mine who ran a local
music store got a phone call. It was a elderly woman
who had a old guitar for sale for $100. She was unable
to drive and asked if he would come to her home.
It was a forty mile drive, to a not so nice section of the city.
As he was leaving we joked about what rare guitar it might
turn out to be.
When Chuck arrived at the home the woman explained the
guitar was in the basement and was too heavy for her to
tote up the staircase. Down they went, Chuck told me later
at this point he was ready to bag the deal as this was getting
wierd, but he forged on. The old gal led him through the dimly
lit basement to her now deceased husbands den.
And there it was. A late fifties sunburst Les Paul.WOW.
He handed her the $100 and asked if he could use the telephone.
He called a collector of guitars who agree to pay $5000 sight
unseen. Now the best part of the story.
Chuck informs the lady he is going to sell the guitar for $5000
and he will pay her an additional $4000 the following day.
Quite a man he was that day, and still is.

Cheers.
