AM I BEING RIPPED OFF?

I purchased a new '65 Twin Reverb in 2004. It had a little noise in the reverb but would stop after warming up. This amp has sat in my office and has been played for less than 10 hours in the four years I have owned it. Grossly underutilized. I decided to have the reverb looked at before the warranty expired so I took it to Village Music in Ogden Utah for repair. They kept it two weeks and when I went to check on it they said that all the tubes need replacing and several of the circuit boards are crack and need replacing.

Shouldn't a new Fender Twin Reverb last longer than 10 hours of playing time and longer than four years?

I also have a Fender Deluxe that I purchased in 1971. I played that amp professionally for a number of years and installed the first set of replacement tubes just last year. 36 years of playing on one set of tubes.

I feel I am being ripped off by this guy. Any thoughts? What should I do about this?

Thanks
Ken

I would have returned it in 2004 to be checked out when you first noticed a "little" bit of noise.

That said, go for a second opinion from another tech at this point.

I would say, they are blowing smoke. I can't see a circuit board cracking with as little use the amp has seen, unless for some reason it happened prior to you owning the amp. Tubes can go just sitting over time, but I have had amps, with similar use lasting 8-10 years without tubes ever being replaced. I would find a good amp tech to look it over and get another estimate. Are these folks an authorized Fender repair shop for amps? Even getting with electronics repair people that work on old Hi-Fi and Ham radio's is an option, if you don't have a good tech in your area.

Tubes usually don't "go" by sitting over time. That's why there is a NOS tube market. You can still find tubes from the 50's and 60's that are still fine. Not using an amp is pretty much the same as abusing one. The caps really need to be used from time to time to keep them formed. Cracked PCB's happen in any amp but not real common in higher and amps. Your 71 Deluxe was wired PTP and probably didn't come with Groove Tubes. This is exactly why I don't like the newer PCB amps.

Thanks for all your replies.
Yes, Mike you are correct. I should have taken it straight back right after I purchased it.

Yes, this is a certified Fender repair center and I have written a letter to Fender to alert them to this shop.

To make bad matters worse, when the store manager gave me this news, I asked for my amp and said I would go elsewhere. He would not give it to me! I fear this is going to get ugly before it is over.

It seems when times get hard, the weak let their ethics slip.

BTW, the name of this place is Music Village in Ogden UT.

Did you get your amp back? If not, send in the troops. Contact your local consumer protection agency, BBB etc. If they have not performed or started any work and without your permission they should release it imeadiately of face criminal charges.

I wouldn't bother with the BBB. I'd would call either the local or state police.
I was involved in a situation similar to this but with other equipment and prosecuted the scumbag that unlawfully held our equipment.

Ahh, I was wondering about the police. Thanks for pointing that out!

That repair place sounds like really sleazy. Care to share the address as a warning to others?
