I love my Tweed, made in the USA Pro Jr. Cranked to 5 or 7, it really opens up. When cranked, the tone control enables so much versatility in the overall dynamic of the sound and even in how the amp breaks up.

However... I'm bummed at the moment with the amp's temperament with hissing and humming. I know the electric outlets I plug into have some of the burden of blame, but even in a conditioned atmosphere, mine still hisses and hums... Is there anything I could do to repair that?

All in all, this is a great amp. I wouldn't sell it for anything. I often prefer it's tone for some things over my '65 Deluxe Reverb RI. However, like I said, I wish I could clean up the hissing...

I'm one of the "lucky" ones I guess. No humming, hissing or rattles after two years of regular use. For your hum problem, check out the Billm mods for the Pro Jr.

I just bought a second Pro Jr from GC a couple days ago. This one is used, so it only cost $129. Best thing is it has very little hiss and hum. So I'm going to poke around the circuit and make some measurements - and swap the tubes back and forth - to see if I can figure out why the new one is rude and the used one is quiet. After that I'll try the Billm mods.

I just got my blonde pro jr today, but there is this annoying hum from the amp. Even with th volume off and guitar not plugged in, the hum is there. Did I get a defective pro jr or is this normal? My blues jr does not have this humming noise.

Try loosening or removing the top center screw from the backplate of the amp. I found that the screw in one of my PJs was touching an internal shield plate and causing a ground loop. I cut the screw a bit shorter, and now the buzz is gone.

I'm glad that it worked for you and good advice.

I removed the top center back panel screw, but the hum is still there. I guess I'm the unlucky one.

You may want to try changing tubes. Mesa/Boogie EL84s (re-branded Sovteks?) have a noticeably darker sound but are decent tubes. 12AT7s in V1 and V2 might help or try a 12AY7 (preamp tube) in V1 (rightmost tube when looking in the back).

Also, some have claimed that changing the speaker had eliminated hum.

UPdate on my pro jr buzzing problem. I just recently changed all of the tubes in my pro jr. I installed a matched set of jj teslas el84s and a pair of electro harmonix 12x7a pre-amp tubes. Now my amp is buzz free!!!!!!!!!!! It is quiet as a well tuned tube amp can be. Changing the tubes really help. I also have installed a Jensen P10R alnico 10" speaker and the sound is so much warmer, smoother than the stock fender speaker. What an improvement indeed.

Good news, glad it worked out for you. They are such good sounding amps :!:

I will join up. I have two PJ's. One is a mid nineties blonde Fender run (not Musicians Friend) with a P10R. The other is one of the last black USA models with a Reverend Alltone 1025.

I kind of like the Ceramic Alltone a bit better because it gets closer to a Marshall tone when overdriven by humbuckers.

Sweet amps!

Nothing like reviving an old post.

I'm in. Got a Pro Jr. last week to act as my lunchbox sized locker stuffer to take to work.

Apparantly all the noise issues have been worked out, although following a buddy's suggestion, I clipped the zip ties and separated the wires that were bundled along the power cord.

I am disappointed in how early it begins to break up though. Would like it to stay cleaner longer. Wonder if I'm simply not giving the speaker enough of a chance to break in. At home I run a '65 RI Deluxe Reverb in parallel with a Blues Jr. NOS through a Lehle Little Dual amp switcher and just love the sounds.

Perhaps an unfair comparison?

This came with the Russian Slovteks. Have been reading about various mods, but many deal with noise.

Considering a new speaker, and have looked over the Weber site pretty extensively. They're running a 15% off sale now.

Have tentatively narrowed my choice down to the 10A125 or the 10A150. Waiting for 'Ted' @ Weber to write back.

The 150 is priceier, but the 15% would ease my mind. Can't help but think if the 11 oz. alnico in the 125 is wonderful, how would the 40 oz. and more $ in the 150 be? Too much magnet?? Dunno, that was one of my questions for Weber.

The other question was in regard to the power rating of the speaker. The stock Fender speaker is rated at 30 watts (perfectly satisfying the 2x thumbrule for a 15w amp). The 125 can be purchased with a 30 watt rating, but the 150 is available only in either a 25w or 50w rating.

I can imagine that the 15w won't be quite enough to always properly drive the 50w speaker, but conversely wonder if I'd be taking a risk of speaker damage with the lower than stock rated 25w 10A150.

Speaker update.

Ordered a Jensen P10R (7 oz. alnico magnet, 1" voice coil, 30 watt rating). It's similar to Webers 10A100 (7 oz, 1", 15 w).

The 10A125 I referenced (11oz., 1.25", 20 or 30w) above is close to the equiv to Jensens P10Q (11 oz., 1.25", 40w). I've since read that many think the Q is just too bright.

From what I'd found, the P10R is what most upgrate their PJ with.

It'll be here in a few days.

Yesterday I received the Jensen P10R from MusiciansFriend.

The Jensen is an 8 ohm, 10", 25 watt with a 7 oz. AlNiCo magnet and a 1" voice coil. The stock one is a 'Specially Designed For' Fender (Eminance), that's rated at 30 watts and uses a ceramic magnet. Couldn't find the remainder of the specs on it, but I'm confident both the magnet and voice coil are bigger than the Jensen. (To be expected for a similar ceramic speaker.)

I swapped out the speakers as soon as I got home from work.

Played through it fairly extensively.

And I can't tell a difference.

Thought I knew what I was doing when I ordered the Jensen, like I said I'd done a lot of reading in this regard, but either didn't read enough or simply absorbed what I wanted to hear.

I'm in the boonies and not in a great position to go and make numerous listening tests. Nearest guitar shop is ~ 100 miles away.

I've actually since read in one place that typically a ceramic magnet will stay cleaner longer.

Just got off the phone with MusiciansFriend, told the guy the whole story, and that I'd read and understood their return policy. (Can't return a raw framed speaker once you've opened/used it unless it's defective).

Asked them if they'd be willing to accept it back and only credit my account for $60. Paid $89.99 for the Jensen. The guy (Ryan) went and talked w/his Supervisor and came back and told me it was actually more trouble than it was worth to allow me partial credit, and that after reviewing my order history, they were going to do a full exchange or credit. Gave me a return Auth. #.

I love these folks. They've been EXTREMELY good to me. Numerous examples.

I'd actually written to Weber, in particular regards to their higher wattage rated speakers, but never heard back from them. Then was convinced the Jensen P10R was the way to go.

Like I said, Weber is running a 15% off sale, and their made to order speakers that may be applicable are, before the 15% off, $95, $165 and $210.

The impression I now have is that in order to clean up the sound I will need a speaker that's rated for higher power. Whether a ceramic magnet or an AlNiCo will best provide this I've yet to determine.

I'm aware of the Celestion Alnico Blue, and it's new higher power Alnico Gold brother which are both now available in a 10, but don't want to spend ~$275 for one. Can justify maybe half again what I paid for the amp, which would put the higher dollar Webers in the list of possibilities with their 15% off.

Or perhaps with this amp and it's single 10" speaker this is already about as good as it gets.

Be thrilled to hear any advice and will entertain any deserved taunts that come to mind.
