Here is an interesting article about it that may help you understand it a bit.

Generally, Class A amps will sound "louder" & the tubes burn really hot. They tend to eat tubes quickly.

Manufacturers of Class A amps really like to say the tone of their amps are way better than AB, however I own both, as do most guys that have more than 2 or 3 amps. If you have a good quality & built AB amp, it shound go head to head with a Class A amp no worries.

My matchless (class A) is amazing, but so is my Fender Twin, Naylor & Fuchs (all AB). www.soultostrings.com/gear.asp for reference

My Prosonics run A/B SS rec A/B tube rec and real class A Tube rec. The class A is softer greasier feeling and spongier. I use the class A mode in lower volume settings to get a feel quite like the amp has when it is really cranked in A/B. I use the A/B mode when i crank the volume to tighten up the amp and increase headroom.
Class A builds a LOT of heat and it flat beats the heck out of the power tubes though!!

I can help with A and A/B, but I haven't heard of any other class of power amplifier being used in a guitar application.

Let's say you hit a single note. The signal that comes out of the pre-amp is a sine wave. A class A power amplifier amplifies the entire sine wave, both the positive half and the negative half. A Class A/B power amplifier has two power amp sections. One amplifies the positive half wave. the other amplifies the negative half wave. Both signals are applied to the speakers. The result is effectively a Class A output, but the two Class B sections are resting half the time. I think A/Bs dominate in guitar amplifiers but some manufacturers (Vox?) use Class As.
