Hi all,

I received a new-ish DRRI yesterday off eBay. I had played the Deluxe Reverb before a number of times and loved it, so I sold my Hot Rod Deluxe and took the plunge.

My question (I really hope it isn't a problem) is this: When I plug straight into any of the channels, the amp sounds exactly like I want it to: warm, full and beautiful.

However, the two pedals that became my standbys for the HRD, Electro-Harmonix's Black Finger Compressor and English Muff'n overdrive, if pushed even a little (relative to what I could do with the HRD), cause the DRRI to produce a tinny, almost solid-state-sounding buzz. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between volume and this buzzing/fuzzy sound, either.

These pedals use both 2 12AX7s and 2 12AY7s, respectively. When I plugged into the INPUT 2 jack, this problem became far less severe.

Sorry for the long post and if anyone's still reading:

Am I just putting too much gain into the front of the amp? Is my speaker loose/broken? Could it be a preamp tube problem? Is my amp haunted?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks very much.

BINGO! Your pedals are the problem. I'd say loose 'em and get something like a tube screamer type pedal. The DRRI has a some what mid scooped tone and a tube screamer has a mid hump to its sound. I'd also suggest an MXR Dyna Comp instead of the EH. With those you'd have a really classic and great sounding rig. Those EH pedals aren't producing enough signal through those tubes anyway. Really they're (tubes) just adding noise.
