Hey...looking for feedback...a buddy of mine recommends getting the Fender Deluxe Reverb amp....thoughts? Or any other models that are similar and not as expensive?

Thanks for your input.

Deluxe Reverbs are pretty good, my only complaint is that they don't distort that well. I use a Hot Rod Deluxe. I highly recommend it, it distorts nicely at low volumes but the clean channel sounds great too. I'd say if you're looking for cleaner tones go with the Reverb, if you want a little more crunch, the Hot Rod is pretty good

Edited to say: I guess someone decided to edit out their comment suggesting the Twin Reverb after I posted a response.

Oh well it was suggested, and this is my comment to that FWIW. The Twin Reverb reissue is a very very loud and clean amp. You will probably never be in a situation where you can get it loud enough to break up without pedals.

It's true, the Deluxe Reverb is an amp that doesn't have a master volume, so you pretty much need to turn the thing up to or past seven to get a good distorted sound, but it seems to me that most people use a stomp box of some sort to get the distortion they prefer anyways. Given that, the field is wide open in regards to the amp models that Fender offers. I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue which I love. I use a Radial Tonebone to get the distortion I like. I think you should probably try several amps to see what you prefer, perhaps even trying several distortion/overdrive pedals as well with whichever amp you choose. The Hot Rod Deluxe was mentioned earlier, and many people swear by them and love them. I have nothing bad to say about them, but I do know that folks who play HRDx amps do, still, often use a stomp box for distortion.

Another point which might seem to muddy the issue is that the speaker(s) in an amp need to be broken in before you get the true sound of the amp. So demoing new amps, even, could be misleading. Nonetheless, of course, the only sensible thing to do is try several out. Best of luck to you.

Not sure if this will help, since you mentioned wanting something in the price range of the Deluxe Reverb. But I will second the Twin Reverb suggestion. I own the '65 RI and it is one of the most incredible amps I have ever played; every time I turn it on I still can't get over how amazing the cleans are. The Twin also sounds great distorted.

Deluxe Reverb with a really good overdrive pedal is the way to go for the money. I think the Twin reverb sounds almost the same, just way more horsepower under the hood. If you want a channel switching amp of the same caliber as the aforementioned, get ready to shell out some cash for a Mesa or Marshall JVM.

The Deluxe Reverb is legendary. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe and I find it just okay. The Deluxe Reverb is a better built amp, is a lot more reliable and is actually a lot more versatile. The natural distortion of the Deluxe Reverb is outstanding. I'm glad I have other amps because the HRDlx has been in the shop quite a bit. I'm going to sell it because for me it's not reliable enough. It's not modded or abused. I have a Twin too. It's an extremely loud clean amp that weighs a ton, but I do love the way it sounds. It sounds nothing like a Deluxe Reverb. The notes bloom in the Deluxe Reverb because of the 6V6's and does not have a ton of headroom. The Twin is just super clean and uses 6l6 tubes.

If you want it loud and clean and reliable go with the deluxe twin reverb.
Use pedals to make it crunchy. If you use echo/delay you can send the effect only output to other channel (clean no reverb) and use it as effect return for just the delay (with no reverb) while having reverb on the main guitar signal. I have been playing Fender amps for along time on and on again off again basis and the only three that I have uncondition love for is the Super 6 (basiclly a deluxe reverb head on an open back 6-10" cab - yes it be classed as a combo :P ) the deluxe twin reverb and my recently purchased super sonic :D - all these amps have one thing in common - it is hard to get a moderate cruch out of them ( clean channel on the super sonic ) so I use a Fulldrive II to do that for me. I can't live with the classic Fender clean tone and I always wanted the later Fender dirty tones (I used to own a super 60 which was decent but underpowered for the clean) and now I have both i my supersonic. If you told me that I was no longer allowed to have my supersonic I would get a twin (or better yet a another super 6) in a heart beat and start looking for some decent pedals.

The Deluxe Reverb is an incredible amp that is way different from a any Hot Rod series amp. The 6v6 power tubes have a unique distortion quality that blooms and is smooth as silk.

Given a choice between a Hot Rod Deluxe and a Deluxe Reverb, the Deluxe Reverb wins hands down, not only in tone but in reliability. I have both in my collection and the HRDlx has been in the shop way too many times and keeps developing new issues. I can't trust it to gig with it anymore. I may just gut it and build a 5e3 in the cabinet and get a new faceplate made. Oh yeah, it's only 2 years old.
The Deluxe Reverb is solid as a rock. To each his own.
Just sit down and try them out. The Ampeg J20 is also an amazing sounding amp and it's hand wired.
