hey guys I always have problems getting good drive tones out of a twin and get annoyed going through tons of expensive boutique pedals.

It seems anything other than mild gain doesn't mix well with the twins. You are definately not getting the more modern sound if you want it? or am I wrong?

Try an Electro Harmonix English Muffin.
I've used everything from a Fender Fuzz Wah (vintage), Big Muff Pi, to a Tube Screamer with my Twin. The English Muffin uses a preamp tube that you can change and experiment with. Pretty cool.

For natural tube distortion, I usually use lower wattage amps.

Give a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube (SFX-03) a try.

Jeff Healey (RIP) while touring with his blues band was using a 65 Twin Reverb reissue with the basic Boss OD pedal board. He had a kick arse tone, much, much better /less ice picks than his rock days with Marshalls in my opinion. The Twin will take any pedal, the key might be to turn your mid way down, adjust the gain and other controls to taste, and then bring the mid control on the twin up to taste after.

I'm fairly certain Jack White uses Twins. And you either love his tone or hate it. I personally love it. 8)

I'll add the ProCo Rat to the list...

I went through a period of looking for a high-gain pedal for my Deluxe Reverb (clean), and needed a lot of gain cause I usually run my volume around 7...

The RAT definitely has plenty of gain, and the filter gives you a good range of tone for humbuckers and singles...

+1 on the ProCo Rat (II). I love this pedal, and have been finding many different approaches in using it.

+1 on the Fulltone. I have the Fulldrive Mosfet. Exceptional tone with my DRRI. I couldn't be happier with my overdrive tones. It's not a high gain pedal though.
