Hi my Blues Deluxe starts going into overdrive at around volume 4 on my normal channel, I was just wondering if that is normal for the amp because I don't even use the drive channel I just turn my volume up to 4 and its like the exact same thing as the drive channel.

My second question is is there a way to make the amp stay clean at higher volumes?

Hi,

I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue, and mine would begin to breakup at around 4-5 as well. If you want more clean volume, you might change out the V1 preamp tube for a 12ay7. That should give you tons of headroom, as I've heard clean volume called. You might even change out the V3 preamp tube for a 12at7. There are many manufacturers, everyone has their own preference for tube brands and retailers. I like www.tubedepot.com. The prices are competitve, they ship quick and cheap. I've also noticed that people like eurotubes.com. Good luck to you.

I would also recommend tube depot as a great choice for a tube supplier. I have a Traynor YCV40WR and the stock sovteks didn't quite cut it. I had tube depot overnight me some new tubes and I was impressed. And kudos to the fact that they only sell power tubes in matched pairs. If you want to add more vintage tone to your amp try the SED SV6L6GC, it worked wonders for my amp.

Looking at the back of your amp with the back cover off and the tube stabilizer removed (that rubbery plastic thingy), the preamp tubes are ordered as follows literally, they are v3, v2, v1-- written here as you would see them from left to right.

Also, now that I have described the amp with the back off, do note: TOUCHING ANYTHING ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD OR ANY OF THE ELECTRICAL PARTS WITHIN THE AMP ITSELF POSES A REAL THREAT TO YOUR LIFE! The capacitors of any amplifier remain charged for months, sometimes, after the amp was last used, and unlike a television circuit board, the voltage charge is often lethal. Not the scare you, just don't touch anything inside the amp chasis and you will be fine.

But you are perfectly safe removing and replacing the tubes. Be careful to watch as you remove them so you'll know which way to install the replacements. Good luck.
