I have a USA made Fender Hot Rod Deluxe that has been giving me some problems lately. It seems to be working fine, but then after 15 mins of use the amp stops working. Basically I do not get any signal from the amp until I unplug the jack from the input and plug it back in or flip the Standby off and on again. It doesn't happen every time I use the amp. Some days it seems like its working perfectly fine and other days it just cuts out. I've also noticed that sometimes it cuts out after adjusting the drive or master volume and the amp can sound buzzy/distorted at times. I can hear an audible constant clicking sound (relay?) from time to time.

-I've checked the tubes and replaced the power tubes with new JJ's
-Opened up the chassis and chopsticked around for any loose components

Any help or suggestions as to what to check would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys!

A couple of things to check:

Make sure all of the ribbon connectors within the chassis are fully seated (look for any that may be damaged as well).

Inspect all of the solder joints on the board, the input jacks, and the tube sockets for any evidence of decay or intermittent contact. Re-heat/re-flow any that appear wonky.

Thanks Arjay! I'll pull the board tomorrow so I can get a better look at the solder joints and I'll also inspect the ribbons. I appreciate your help!

Hokey dokey, post a sitrep after you get a chance to look the amp over. Hopefully it'll be something simple (and inexpensive) to fix. BTW, also check out the speaker jack, the plug on the end of the wiring harness, and the wires as they attach to the lugs on the speaker itself. Could be something amiss there as well.

Retro is right !

Your amp may have many issue and you may need to find a good amps tech.
New Power Tube may need a new bias.

Update: so I pulled the board yesterday and got a good look at the back of it. It looks like the (2) 470 ohm 5w resistors are getting too hot as they left visible marks on the back of the board. I'm going to start by replacing both of those. Should I use the same type of resistor or is there a better replacement that can be seated a little off if the board to keep it from getting too hot and potentially damage the board?

Thanks!

It is normal and chance are both resistance are good. IMO it is not the amp issue.
Bad resitors are always bad, not someday.
Check bad solder.

Meter ohm reading is a must to see if they are good or not

Any 470 ohms, 5 watts or more will do the job. I use often square ciment / ceramic resistor.
Solder them at at least 1/8 inches from the board.

I checked the 470 ohm resistors and they are within tolerance. I also examined and tested the ribbon cables for continuity and they appear to be fine. I checked out the speaker cable input jack and tube sockets and cleaned them with deoxit. I checked the solder joints and reflowed solder into any that looked suspect. Bias is currently set to approximately 72. I tested it on the bench and of course I could not get the issue to occur so I put the amp back together and played it for a while. Unfortunately, after about 15 mins I started getting volume drops. It sounds like a power tube issue, but I've already tried replacing them. Could it be a preamp tube causing the volume fluctuations or potentially the filter caps (I've heard the stock filter caps on these amps are pretty awful)?

Thanks!

It is not filter caps issues.
470 ohms do not need to be within specs. 600 or 200 ohms will work. Open resistor or very high value won't work.
Yes some little chance it could be a preamp tube.

It is not a esy amp to fix.

You need to be a amp tech to do a good circuit checkup.
A pro may see something wrong were you see nothing wrong.
You may not have knowledge to fix this issue.

Your amp must see a good amp tech.

The stock filter caps are pretty lame but I'm doubtful that they're the reason for the intermittent volume drop. When an electrolytic fails it's usually a catastrophic event, ie: it blows up, spooging molten electrolyte all over the chassis.

Have you tried plugging directly into the "power amp in" jack? If so, did the same symptom manifest (audible decrease in volume)? If not, the issue likely lies somewhere within the pre-amp. If so, there's something wonky in the power amp.

When a 'lytic fail you will hear a "hum" because there is no more or less filtering.

Could be as simple as a bad instrument cable.

+100 or guitar issue

You make an excellent remark.

For an amplifier problem, I take for granted (probably wrong) that the guitar and its cable are not in question.
That the user is certain that the problem really comes from the amp.
Or that the problem lies with the 10 effect pedals connected ...

Are you still hearing that audible clicking sound?

I am hoping to be able to test the amp more today. If not, I will be able to test it more this weekend. I have tried different cables and different guitars and the problem persists. Also, the clicking only seems to be audible when the guitar is close to and is facing the amp.
