Hi, just bought a used 65 DRRI from 90's on Reverb. This one seems to have less clean headroom than the ones I tried in store and breaks up around 3, leaving not much volume for cleans.
Has 6v6 power tubes but preamp tubes are unidentified, has stock Jensen Special Design speaker.
I need this amp for cleans and want to use pedals for overdrive, is there anyway I could increase the clean headroom?

If all tubes are good ( we can find bad tubes in new amp) you can replace first preamp ( V1) wich is a 12AX7 by a tube with less gain.

I use few time 12AY7 with success. You will loose a bit output power.

Is the speaker is the best one ? I don't know. More powerfull are the speaker, more chance to have a headroom with no speaker distortion. On some '60 Blackface Deluxe Reverb, Fender put 100 watts speaker.

Yes.

Trade it in on a Twin Reverb.

If you use the Normal channel, you can replace V1 with a lower-gain tube like a 5751.

V1 is the small tube furthest to the right when looking at the amp from the rear. It's covered with a twist-off shield can.

If you use the Vibrato channel, replace the next tube, V2.

You could also replace the speaker with one with a higher
"sensitivity" rating. Something like an Eminence L'il Texas or Red, White & Blues.

Such a speaker will be a bit louder, so you can get the same sound level but turn the amp's volume lower.

Have the amp biased toward the cold side. First, put in some JJ 6V6s. I would actually do this first.
