Hi all,

I just joined this forum so hi. I just managed to pick up a used but in good condition 65' Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I've already done a few minor mods. I did the jumper to add the reverb and tremolo to the normal channel, I replaced the tone stack caps on both channels with Mojotone PIO ones. The normal channel remains .1mfd and .047mfd and the tremolo channel at .022mfd for both. I removed the bright cap from c10. I also replaced the Jensen C12K with an Eminence GA SC-64. I've also biased the amp at the 70 of max current. Overall this amp sounds fantastic in every way. I'm also impressed how Marshall this amp is when the tone stack caps were changed in the one channel.

Now that I think I'm in a good place with the base tone of the amp, I'm looking for the secrets the veteran users of this amp might have with their overdrives, fuzzes, general applications that really make it shine. Also my go to Marshall has a small issue so heading to the shop for a little TLC, so I have time to really learn this amp. I play anything from overdriven blues to occasionally stuff that crosses in to early 80's heavy metal, nothing to extreme though. Your feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey RockinProf,

Are you saying that you biased the amp to 70 mA, which is 35 mA per tube? Should be closer to 24 mA per tube, and that is on the high end. This is presuming about 400-420 VDC Plate.

Hi, my bias is set at 23.4mA per 6V6. When I said 70 I meant as a 70 of max current using the listed wattage from the data sheet (6V6S=14W) X .7 = ma/ 420 v (from my bias tester). Hope that clears is up.

Its a great amp!!! Turn it up loud and it gets better. Try some good NOS tubes. Remove those tube covers.
I prefer 5751's up front and a little colder bias to maintain headroom to allow pedal gain range.
You've already made a few mod's to your taste and upgraded the speaker, thats a good start.

70% is too high if you play at high volume, tubes may not last.
Try a 60 % you won't heare any difference in tone.

Oh, 70%. Got it, thanks. :)

Good advice so far, keep it coming :)

I tried lowering the bias a bit but found I lost the bell like low bass. The power tubes I’ve currently got installed are just JJs, so if they burn up quick that’s just an excuse to go to my source for NOS tubes that I can bias for better life.

I’ve put a NOS Sylvania 12AX7 in V1 (.1mfd and .047mfd cap channel) and a NOS RCA 12AX7 in V2 (.022mfd caps channel) then a NOS GE 12DW7 in V3 and NOS Phillips 12AT7s in V4 and V6. The difference in fantastic. Will take off the tube shields as suggested a little later today.

This is such a fantastic amp, I should have picked up one years ago.

Thoughts on rectifier tube upgrades?

Thanks again!

I still have the original JJ output tubes in mine, going strong for seven years now.
All the rest through to the phase inversion have been swapped.

What benefit do you expect from this?

I bought my limited edition "Fudge Brownie" DRRI in 2015 and have been very happy with it. Apart from the colour, the only difference from the regular DRRI is the speaker which is a Jensen P-12Q instead of the usual C-12K.

Other than tubes I have not made any changes to the amp. The tubes it came with were Groove Tubes branded JJ ECC83S in V1, V2, & V4; Groove Tubes branded JJ ECC81 in V3 & V6; a Groove Tubes branded Sovtek 12AX7 in V5; Groove Tubes branded JJ 6V6S in the power section and a Fender branded 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier. Within the first 3 months several tubes became noisy so I decided to replace them all.

In V1 & V4 my favourites are the TAD 7025S (same as the Preferred Series 7025 and there is also a Ruby branded tube the same) but I also like the Beijing Factory 6N-4J in these positions. I have also tried Tung Sol 12AX7 and JJECC83 in these positions. I have to say that played clean, I can tell very little difference between these tubes but when pushed either by turning up the amp or with overdrive pedals the differences start to emerge.

In the power section I like the Tung Sol 6V6GT and TAD 6V6GT-STR.

For the driver positions (V3 & V6) I am using the highly recommended JAN Philips ECC81/12AT7WC and Mullard CV4024 but to be honest they sound no different to the JJ ECC81 or Tung Sol 12AT7W/6201. Anything will work in V5 but I am currently using a well used 1957 Mullard ECC83 that I got out of an old television.

I play a Fender Stratocaster about 90% of the time but when I am not using that I will most likely be playing either a Fender Telecaster or Gibson Les Gold Top with P-90s.

Depending on where I am playing I will sometimes use a TAD Silencer attenuator that allows me to crank the volume to get that glorious power tube breakup. When I use the attenuator I use a Fredric Effects Golden Eagle (Klon clone) for lead tones on the neck pickup and a Free The Tone MS-SOV for lead tones on the bridge pickup.

If I am not using the attenuator the amp will be clean and I will use an Okko Diablo Gain+ which allows me to have a low breakup setting for crunch rhythm and a higher gain sound for lead tones on the neck pickup. I also like the Mad Professor Royal Blue overdrive for crunchy rhythm and lead tones on the neck pickup. For lead tones on the bridge pickup I use either the MS-SOV or a Maxon VOP-9. I do not like the Klon clone into a clean amp but it is great into an amp that is breaking up.

I play blues and for that it is a fantastic amp!

A 5Y3 would lower the voltage and give earlier breakup. Very nice sound, a bit smoother and creamier, with breakup at lower volumes. Probably best to try a new production 5Y3, as the NOS could red-plate at higher volumes, although you could try it and keep an eye on the tube for signs of red-plating while playing. I have tried it in a few amps, and in some like the Bassman, the NOS did red-plate.

What bias would you recommend with a 5Y3?

I almost always use the same formula for setting bias. Max tube wattage times 70% (or whatever % you want), divided by the Plate voltage.

So for most 6V6, 14 watts times .7 equals 9.8 watts. For example: 9.8 watts divided by 380 vdc on the Plate equals approximately 26 mA per tube. Be sure to measure the actual Plate voltage.

NOS 5Y3 rectifier tubes are typically lower voltage output than modern made 5Y3.
