Hi everybody, I’ve got a brand new BJ Lacquered Tweed, received a few days ago from Fender. I play it with an American Standard Tele from 2009 but it gives me a bad “hum whistle” while the Tele is plugged in and tone or volume fully opened. Instead if I turn off volume or tone this whistle goes away. How can I resolve this problem? It is annoying to play with it in my ears (especially on clean tone!) and it stays in my audio recordings! finally I noticed that by connecting a very cheap guitar with two single coils and a humbucker the humbucker position almost completely disappears the whistle. Should I start thinking about installing noiseless pickups on the telecaster? in this case would you recommend me some particular model that does not remove the typical sound of my guitar? Thank you and forgive me for my English, Luca

The Tele (and Strat) are single coil guitars. Single coils are noisy. Strats run the center pickup reverse-polarity, so they are hum canceling in positions 2 and 4.
The hum should be below the level of the signal when actually playing, and it should not be too bad with the amp set sparkly clean (but where's the fun in that?)
I'd take it back to the shop and ask about it... compare other amps to yours with your Tele, maybe try another single coil guitar like a Strat on your amp and see if it sounds the same.

Hum or buzz is normal... whistle is not, unless it is cranked wide open and you are getting microphonic feedback.

Whistle may come from a microphonic 12XX7 tube :(

Hum is another story. I may come from same microphonic tube ?

Single coil pick may produce very light hum, nothing to worry about.
Here in forum we are a lot who using single coil guitar with tubes amps with no complain about hum.

Reverse tubes V1 with V2
Or V1 with V3
Not better ? reverse V1 with V3 or V2 with V3

Yes, it is normal, but it is unexpected for people with no experience with Single coil pickups.

I doubt that it is a tube, because he said that it doesn't happen with humbuckers.

The problem lacks precision in its description, I would try the tubes.
Single coils do not make a "wistle".
Has the guitar been modified or is it original?

If it is through experience of single coils, the author should start by taking the time to get used to it because a replacement of microphones can change the sound of the guitar and it will not be satisfied.

I knew a lot of people who never had the slightest problem of hum with single coils from the first use. No habit to acquire.
Otherwise the forums would be flooded with these post

I see such threads frequently on other Strat forums.
Often the poster is asking if they should get Noiseless pickups.

It's a part of the Strat tone, but it can be extremely irritating when playing with high gain, particularly through a distortion pedal.

The symptom you describe sounds to me like it is interference that the guitar is picking up.
When you describe the noise coming through your recordings, The computer or monitor you are recording on can be a source of that noise.
The Humbucker cure is a sign that it is externally caused. They are designed to cancel noise, not just hum.
It is kinda random which amp will pick up noise like that. Good ones and cheap ones can be affected. Put your guitar near suspected noise sources and listen for an increase in noise.
Try a different location to see if it goes away.
