I have a DRRI and a few times recently the volume has gradually faded until it is almost silent then slowly returns to normal. The whole process from normal volume to quiet and back to normal takes probably about 10 seconds.

On each occasion it has done it, it has been within the first couple of minutes of switching the amp on. It doesn't do it every time I use it and yesterday we had a 6 hour practice and I didn't notice it once.

Any suggestions what could be the cause?

I do have some pedals in front of the amp; could the problem be there?

Sounds like you may have a marginal power tube.

Thanks for the pointer Arjay.

I have some spare power tubes so I'll swap them in and see if it happens again.

More likely a preamp tube (or poor connection in preamp circuit), as you would not lose all volume if only one power tube flakes out, and both are not likely to flake out like this at the same time.

Not enough information to tell where issue come from. Look not a tube issue IMO

You should test the amp with no pedals in front : only guitar plugged in the amp.
A issue with pedals or pedal cables or power supply = issue in amp volume.
Check guitar cable too.

I don't think it is a problem with any of the leads between the guitar and amp because the loss and return of the volume seems very smooth. Almost like the volume being turned down and back up again. And if a lead was bad I would be to force the problem which I can't.

Having done it a few times over several days it has been ok since I made the original post! I am now on holiday so will not get the chance to try it again for a week or so.

To test properly a amp with issue, we must use only a guitar plugged in the amp. No effect.

Since returning from holiday I've tried the amp several times and it continues to be very well behaved! No sign of the volume fading in and out of it's own accord so I will leave things alone until there is any repetition of the phenomenon.

I had the exact issue a few years ago. Gradual volume loss and then back to normal. I swore it was the power tubes. I replaced them. Turned out later it was a bad cable. Old radio shack coil one. Used it between the board and amp. Was thinking how old it was and couldn’t believe it still worked. I would check all of your cables.
