I'm a beginner guitarist and bought the 50XL for my first guitar amplifier, and I love it!

But I've noticed a feedback issue on the reverb, where even at a relatively low setting (dial at ~ 9 o'clock), the reverb seems to feed back on itself.

Is this by design? A fault? Or just a quirk in all of them that we just need to live with?

What I mean by "feedback" is that the reverb continuously repeats itself and gets louder and louder without me touching the guitar. It's my understanding that typically reverb should fade, not get louder.

I edit my answer , my opinion is the same and you look to know how reverb should work.

Or your set-up is wrong if it is it a multi effect amps

There's nothing strange about my setup - guitar direct into amp, reverb effect set to approximately 1/4 (~9:00), and the amp doesn't have an effects loop. The feedback is coming from the built-in effect.

My question is whether the amp it designed to be this way, if the amp is faulty, or if this is unusual but within expected behavior for the Champion 50XL series.

Can anyone advise?

Can you try another amp at the store you bought it or ask to the dealer waht he thinking about ?

Or you bought in line or second hand ?

Good luck to have a answer.
