Does anyone here use the Marshall Guv'nor (original) with their Fender amp?
Due to my dissatisfaction with the drive/more drive on the DeVille I've been using it lately.........but people have said that there's no point in me having a valve amp if I'm using that as it's a solid state box, or is using one through the beautiful clean channel a unique voice on it's own?

Opinions and knowledge please!

If you are happy using it, then use it.

Any suggestions to get a Marshall type distortion sound through a Fender amp? A Tube Screamer through the DRIVE channel set on low isn't too bad, but still not enough........Any suggestions before we buy?

You won't get a real Marshall sound through a Fender amp. Nothing wrong with using a box with a tube amp. You can use the distortion box to drive the front end of the tube amp into natural distortion without going deaf. Just use it as a boost.
You can tame the drive channels by changing the preamp tubes. I put JJ's in mine. I got them from Eurotubes. They call them Blues Option #1. The set changed the whole character of mt Hot Rod Deluxe.

That depends on your playing style really. The problem with a solid state box with valve amp is that most overdrive/distortion boxes will block or reduce the response that you get from the tube amp the harder you hit your strings. This can be a pain if you play with a pick or fingers, or combinaison of both. However if that is not your playing style, a solid state box + valve amp is just fine.

Hope this helps,

I use (almost) the other way around.....

A Fender Cybertwin SE with a Kampo tube pedal 901 in front of it.
the Kampo has a 12AX7 inside and the combination of the Amp and the pedal is (for me) fantastic.

However, it is a matter of personal taste.

I have used an original Ibanez TS808 with the Cybertwin and that was a great combination to.

Your ears decide what is a good sound/combination for you

I play alot of styles and use a large selection of solid state and tube combinations. When I desire the most  unholy  of tones I start my signal path at 25% vol. on a dist. generator. then to a tube amp "instrument in" set on clean at about 75%- 100% of vol. (to get true tube warmth). then set my master vol. at the desired level to mix well with the group. Of course you can set your gain on your dist box to your taste. IMO a dist generater can add alot of versitility to your sound (low level practice or super complex gain). Tube gain in your preamp is were the magic happens. Try it!

I bought the 6v6 JJ Blues option #2 which uses the same pre-amp setup tubes you have and I love it in the DRIVE channel but it is still too compressed in the MORE DRIVE and doesn't sound/feel natural enough. That is why I am looking for that "Marshall" type sound in conjuction with a distortion pedal. The DRIVE channel now gives me an awesome tone/feel for blues, but when I need "more" for distorted rock chords/leads I can't dial it in. Maybe another pre-amp tube adjustment? or dist pedal?

Sounds like you may need a Marshall. Fender and Marshall are two completely different animals. If it's any consolation, you can't get a Fender clean from a Marshall either.
