The H/W '64 Custom DR is probably the pick of the litter in terms of sonic authenticity and reliable operation. With a quality array of glass and the power tubes correctly biased it should deliver pleasing tones for many many years.

Of course for the $2500 price of the '64 DR there are lots of actual vintage Fenders. Early silverfaces before they started "improving" them are relative bargains.

You could get 2 or 3 nice silverfaces for that money.

Even among the lower cost PCB reissues, you can get an early silverface Twin Reverb or Super Reverb for about the same price as a new reissue.

And for all the jokes about the silly huge amps, a home amp out in the sticks is pretty much the perfect scenario for a Super Six or a Quad Reverb. They're totally impractical as gigging amps but they sound great, and since no one wants to haul them around they're less expensive than the sane combos.

All of this hyperbole is a non sequitur.

The OP asked specifically about the "best blackface re-issue".
