Hi there, i bought a brand new Fender 57 custom deluxe back in November. It's an amazing sounding amp, but yesterday I went to play it and there is no sound. Not even amp hum when turned all the way up. I've checked all the obvious things like standby switch guitar volume etc.

I had a look at the valves and noticed that the rectifier is not lighting up like the others. But have no idea which rectifier to buy.

Do Fenders use Groove Tubes out of the box? If so, should I buy a GT5Y3 and get a tech to fit it for me?

Or are there other rectifiers that I should consider?

Cheers.

If all the bottles save for the 5Y3 are lit, along with the pilot lamp, it's a reasonable assumption that your rectifier has taken a dump (tube heaters and the pilot light are AC-powered which means that a dead recto would have no effect on those functions). Any quality 5Y3 will be fine -- a purest *might* check the bias-supply voltage but it's really not necessary. There's no reason why you couldn't change this tube yourself and skip a tech's bench fee. Vintage NOS tubes are still available for fair prices. I personally like the CBS/Hytrons and the Ken-Rads.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I appreciate it. Is there an advantage to uae NOS vintage tubes?

I'm a total novice with this stuff, is changing the rectifier as simple as changing a lightbulb. I'm scared I'll break something. :)☺️

I'm from the UK by the way. Is there any particular rectifier that you could recommend that's available here? Sorry to be a pain in the rear.

Mike

Which of these 4 would you recommend for example?

Had a look in the back and it appears to have a Ruby 5Y3GTBC in there at the moment. Are they standard for Fenders?

I live in the UK and have often used Hotrox for valve purchases. The people at Hotrox are very good and will give sound advice if you phone them.

Of the 4 valves listed, I would go with the JJ. They make good quality valves at a good price. JJ seems to be a brand that people like to knock but I have never had a problem with them.

Not IMO
I like more JJ or Sovtek.

I would go with the Sovtek, they aren't always not the most musical sometimes, but they are tuff tubes, and for a rectifier that is quite important!

Just my 2 cents!

Thanks for all your replies guys. Really appreciate it.

If I install one of these rectifiers myself it won't need re-biasing will it?

I don't tend to push the amp too hard although I do have to keep my guitar volume about half as the amp get's loud very quickly.....

Regarding the amps interactive volume controls, I play in instrument 1 and keep it's volume turned fairly low, but usually turn instrument 2's volume up all the way to max as I like the tone it produces..... Could this be why I blew the rectifier in the first place???? I really have no idea.

The 57 Deluxe is Cathode biased, no need to adjust bias with new tubes.

Just be aware that the Sovtek puts out very high voltages for a 5Y3, much higher than than a vintage NOS 5Y3. The JJ 5Y3 puts out voltages closer to vintage correct and your power tubes will be much happier not being roasted.

I have not used a Sovtek 5Y3GT. About how much more DCV does it raise the B+. Over say, the JJ?

Thanks!

In a 5E3 that likes an ideal Plate voltage around 360V the Sovtek will bump it up closer to 390 or even 400. Many kit suppliers used to supply the Sovtek with their 5E3 kits as that was the only new production 5y3 available for a long time and there were problems with high voltages, but now most supply the JJ since it's been available as the Plate voltage produced is more in the ballpark and around 40~ volts lower than the Sovtek.

https://www.18watt.com/viewtopic.php?t=15926

The above link is just an example but a bit of Google searching will turn up a lot off high voltage reports using the Sovtek, some say it is actually a re-labeled, 5V4 that Sovtek got away with for years as it seemed close enough and was all that was available for a "5Y3" in new production.
