Is it safe/advisable to swap the stock 5ar4 rectifier in the '68 Custom Princeton Reverb with a 5R4 (GA/GB)? I'm not sure about the rating on the amp's filter caps, as i'm not much of an amp tech.

It appears to be general consensus that this should be an appropriate swap, but i'd like to be sure before I take it to a local amp tech to get it put in and re-biased.

Hey Chris,

Changing to from a 5AR4 to a 5R4xx will drop the B+ voltage about 50 volts, and give a bit earlier breakup. It is perfectly safe in this instance, as the filament current draw is about the same. If you lower the voltage too much, as in changing from 5AR4 to a 5Y3xx for example, the rectifier can red plate at higher volumes. So be sure to test the amp thoroughly after the swap to be sure there is no red plating when amp is cranked. I'm certain there will be no problem, but always check to be sure yourself.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
