Hi everybody! This is my first post... it is great to be part of the forum!

I recently bought a brand new 68 Custom Twin Reverb and, although I love the tone, it has a very bad idle hiss problem. This hiss is not your average tube amp idle hiss... it's rather loud and it makes it impossible to play quieter song parts... I can only imagine that it would be a nuisance in the recording studio or when miked in larger stage.

I've been researching and apparently this is a known issue with the new Silverface Twin and Deluxe Reverb amps, but I wanted to ask you guys if this is as common as it seems.

So, I guess my question is: Do all new Silverface Twin Reverb amps do this even when they are brand new? Has anyone bought one that does not do it? Are they prone to having this hiss after sometime even if they don't do it at first?

Since I bought my amp in a well known guitar store chain, I have the chance to return it and get a new one. I am on the fence now between getting another silverface and hoping that the problem was not the model but the specific amp I got, or just spending a little bit more and getting a 65 reissue, since every single one of the blackface amps I've tried had no hiss at all compared to the silverface ones.

Thanks!

Hiss issues are endemic with all of those custom silverface amps (Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, and Princeton Reverb), with the cause being -- mostly -- a poorly designed NFB loop circuit. Substandard tubes also play a role. Use this forum's search function to find similar posts which will also illustrate some possible remedies.

"Do you really need this very heavy amp ?" I don't, but I have one. its a 70's silverface that was in bad shape. local amp guy rebuilt it to 65 blackface specs, and put in a blonde cabinet. can't play it loud, but I still love the sound, and its an amp I wanted ever since I was a 12 year old kid back in '66.

as a side note, this amp does have some hiss, but not enough for me to worry about.

hiss ! there are hiss and hiss.
Could be normal at hi volume, not a low volume. Or rebuilt is the issue or amp need to repair

By design, the 65 Blackface reissues are not supposed to hiss when sitting idle (nothing plugged in). My TRRI is incredibly quiet when idle. Right out of the box, it hissed. After getting some help from the forum here, it turned out to be only a tube (V4). I'm now in my last year of the 5 year warranty (no longer available BTW*) and have only replaced 2 tubes. Not bad, and the amp is sounding great (better than new). Get a 65 TRRI if you want quiet.

*New Fender amps now have a 2 yr warranty and no longer 5 years.
