My advice would be - order a couple of replacement tubes. It's always a good idea to have a spare handy. They never fail at the opportune time but rather when you're in the middle of something.

upnorth2 - Thanks that is good advice. These are new waters for me. Do you have any tube recommendations? Should I stay with what came with the amp originally (Groove Tubes)? Where is the best place to order the tubes? Thanks.

Groove tubes just select and put their own label on other tubes. If you want to find what the tubes really are it is easy to find out with Google search.

In my 65DRRI I have used TAD, Tung Sol and JJ. JJ often get a bad press but I like them. In fact my 65DRRI came with GT labelled JJ tubes in all positions (ECC83S, ECC81 and 6V6S).

The Tube Amp Doctor's are the same deal as A. Pittman started with Groove Tubes, hand selected from other brands. Like Tim has mentioned, I've also had good results with the gold pin JJ's for new production replacements.

Regarding the '68 Custom Twin Reverb noise issue(s)

If you want to lower the noise floor hiss, a simple fix is to change V4 tube (4th from the right looking at the back) from the stock 12AX7 to a 12AY7 low gain tube.

They say this will change the characteristic of the amp, as it is meant to be a high gain amp, though going with a lower gain tube on the reverb output, we find that it simply lowers the amount of overall reverb, yet usually you would only have your reverb at 2 or 3; with a 12AY7 you may want to turn your reverb to 3 or 4.

Have fun
