Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could please guide me as to whether the Fender hot rod deville has a series or parallel effects loop?

In particular, the model in this link:https://reverb.com/item/18211427-fender-hot-rod-deville-60-watt-4x10-guitar-combo-1999?utm_source=android-app&utm_medium=share

Thank you!

There is no effect loop in Hot Rod Deville

Only Preamp Out and Power Amp In.

Thanks for the response!

Can that not be used - in some sense - like an effects loop?

Short answer: yes, you can use the pre out power in jacks to insert modulation and time-based effects after the preamp. So yes, it's an "fx loop".

Long answer:

Fender calls it an fx loop.

Scroll down and click the "specs" link.

Pre out/power in is an fx loop. It's the most simple, basic, limited type of fx loop, the most common type of fx loop.

It's a series loop.

"Real" loops (better loops) have adjustable send/return levels. That allows you to effectively use rack & studio effects as well as stomp boxes. And also allows you to "trim" the loop to your playing volume. (Often there will be a switch for line level/instrument level, plus individual knobs for send level and return level.)

One problem with basic loops is that the send level is entirely dependant on the preamp volume knob. As you turn up the amp, the loop signal also goes up. At low volume, the signal can be too weak for some rack effects. At high volumes, the signal can be too strong and overdrive the input of floor pedals. With send/return level controls, at low preamp levels you can crank up send and turn down return, so the effect gets a good strong input signal. At high preamp levels, you turn down the send level and crank up the return.

Many "real" loops are also footswitchable.

But the HRD type of loop is very common. It's the type of loop most people use, and it's generally adequate. The fancier loops are more for studio use when you have time for tweaking, or if you have effects that are very picky about their input level.
---------------------
Parallel loops always have a "blend" or "mix" knob. That's their reason for existing.

A series loop breaks the connection between the preamp and power amp and sends all the signal through the loop. A parallel loop maintains the regular connection between the preamp and power amp, so by twisting the knob you can blend in a little or a lot of the effected signal.

Parallel loops are less common, and while they give you the blend option there are some effects that work better in series. So most amps that have a parallel loop also have a series loop.
