they make some great points. Especially: "What the ear perceives from a solo electric guitar and from a guitar blended into the mix of a full band are two entirely different things."

Each to their own. I have not tried the very latest vox hp amps but I did use one older model.
The new ones may well be the ticket.
I found the shape awkward for the strat jack and the sound was very transistorized.
The pots were also cheap and noisy.
Just my humble take on things :D

Quite some years ago I found a video in which a guy was in the studio with access to some of Led Zeppelin's actual original tape. The purpose was to examine Jimmy Page's guitar tone. He demonstrated the difference between Jimmy's tone in the mix and when it was isolated. The difference in your perception of it was quite astonishing. Jimmy was known for having sort of a bright tone to begin with compared to some other players of the time but when his track was isolated from the mix it almost hurt your ears. I looked for that video again a couple of years ago for use in another discussion somewhere but I was unable to find it at that time.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Excellent point on the impact of the mix.
My garage band struggled with not sounding "muddy", and the problem was all of us were trying to duplicate the tone that we heard on the album when we practiced alone and used the same settings with the band.

To go back and touch on John's comment about the focus of bedroom practice...
The way to truly focus on your playing is to play completely clean, with no compression.
Every missed note, every slip of the pick that results in a hard attack or missed string, every tuning/intonation issue, and every buzzing fret.... They will be an ice pick in your ears.
Work to eliminate those.

I used to play with the gain dimed AND with a compressor (also dimed).
That covers a myriad of technique problems.... but it did nothing to make me a better player.
