Hello, with my band I use a hot rod deluxe III and I'm very happy with it. Love clean tone and use pedals for distortion.
I would like to sound as much as possible in my bedroom with headphones on, so any advice on a small amp (solid state, modelling, whatever) to go close to it? I just need the clean channel...but well done.
I understand it's impossible to have perfect tube tone but which is the closest thing to it?

Thanx!

The Fender Mustang 1 is really good, models most Fender amps, and has a good clean sound. I now no longer need mine, so let me know if you want to buy it.

It is my opinion that if you are only practicing quietly in your bedroom then your concentration should be on improving your playing rather than on the fine nuances of tone.
Leave your tone pursuits to settings involving your real amplifier.
Getting great tone at very low volumes usually has absolutely nothing to do with getting great tone on stage and whatever you learn about tone in the bedroom will be useless on stage.
That's my opinion.

That said, these products HERE are quite highly rated for your intended purposes.

As accurate and succinct a response as can be.

Those little Vox things are pretty cool. They perform as advertised, they don't sound bad, and even if they crap out after a couple of years they're so inexpensive you can just hook-shot them into any convenient dumpster and buy another.

I have a HRD and I also have a 15 watt Egnater Tweaker which has as close a clean sound to the HRD as I could find.

Regarding the "digital modeling" type amps, the closest thing to the real sound is very expensive. Too expensive to justify for bedroom use. Line 6 has been doing the modeling thing forever and they have some great little fizz boxes. Boss Katana is another offering a lot of people seem to be going with. There is also Marshall Code and of course Fender Mustang GT. Out of those, if you're looking to replicate a nice Fender clean tone, try the Katana and/or the GT.

I would add some/most multi-effect pedal boards have a headphone out option, access to some different pedal flavors and go pretty cheap on the used market.

That's 100% true, but sometimes GAS is out of control !
Anyway, thanx everyone for the advices!

I bought one of those Vox headphone amps (Amplug2) and am totally blown away. I got the "clean" which also has several effects including overdrive and various reverb and chorus settings. If that weren't enough, you can run it through your pedal board, home stereo system and run backup tracks via another input. Battery life is phenomenal and all this for under $40. Seriously, it really does sound quite amazing. I finally got something right.

I've actually never tried one myself but I hear great things.
One thing about these VOX units does have me curious though.
Is that little black extension on the 1/4" phone plug long enough to allow its use with a standard Stratocaster jack?

Yes, it's plenty long enough. All I have is a Strat. It also is maneuverable with different positions. The amplug2 is an upgrade from the original and I have yet to find anything bad about it.

Definitely got my interest with this one. I'm always locked into Fender/Marshall world. The one time I got to play through an AC15C1 I really enjoyed the change of pace.

I would like to have them all. There would be no need for amps and pedals unless you play on stage. For that, I have my Twin Reverb and some pedals.

I saw this article and it made me think of this thread.

Reverb - Bedroom Tone Vs. Live Tone
