If you go to the Groove Tubes site , they give a breakdown of the different types of tubes and their traits.

I believe eurotubes has that available on their site as well.

NOS 12AU7's I have seen are pretty inexpensive. I have several of them myself that I picked up for next to nothing on eBay.

I have a JJ 12au7 in v1 in my Blues Deluxe RI. I also installed 6v6s power tubes, which gives the clean channel a sound volume similar to a Champion 600. I installed an EH 12ay7 in v2 which lowered the volume of the second channel as well, yet it still has a nice over driven sound to it. To round it out I changed the v3 tube to a 12at7. It's done such a nice job of lowering the volume that I may reinstall the 6l6 power tubes. I purchased all of my tubes from tubedepot.com, who have reasonable prices, package the tubes well and ship them promptly.
