Hey guys,

I'm looking for a new tube amp. I recently bought a gibson es-335 and want to get a nice amp to go with that guitar. I play blues and classic rock(Beatles, stones, kinks, cream etc.). I want to get a bluesy tone out of the amp, a bit like claptons tone in Cream. It's for home practice and small-medium gigs. I don't have much money, so there are only a few options for me:

Fender Blues jr tolex
Fender Blues jr tweed NOS
Fender Blues deluxe
Fender hot rod deluxe

Can you give me your opinion what is the best amp to get.

THanks

For my money I would say the blues jr, either one. It is just hard to get good tone out of the other two at home due to their size. For small gigs you should be fine, but may have to mic it for bigger venues.

The 335 will sound excellent with a Blues Jr.

I'm gonna have to try a Blues Jr. one day, to see what they're like. I keep hearing, over and over, how good they are. So I imagine they just be very good.

I have the Hot Rod Deluxe. I've had it for about a hear now, and I've been very happy with it. I've been able to keep it low enough for home practice (although I've hears other complain it's too loud for that use), and I've used that amp to play over bass and drums. I can get quite loud if needed.

Well any of those would sound great with a 335! From what I've heard (my .02 cents...) is the NOS probably has the better blues sound and may be in the wattage range you may be looking for. I think it really will come down to noise level for you. I have a Deville 410 and use an Ibanez as-73 (335 clone) and it sounds wonderful and has a great bluesy sound! I did change the PU's to Gibson burstbuckers however... :) Ok, I know it isn't a real Gibson, but.....

The 60/40 watt amps are very loud for home use, but can be tamed. I built this volume box which works great! http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/newland/2081/id3.htm It works with a Deville or a Deluxe.

Here is my rig..... :)

I have both the Blues jr. and the Blues Deluxe ReIssue. Both are great amps, but here's my take on the pros/cons of each:

I think that the Blues jr. is over-priced for a single channel amp. The fat switch does increase the mids, but the increase in volume isn't enough to use it as a volume boost for soloing. Therefore, I have to have additional pedals to satisfy my needs when using the Blues jr. One of the additional pedals is a Boss EQ because, to my ear, the jr. lacks a little bottom to it. I've ended up supplementing it with around $400 worth of pedals. If I cut it to a bare minimum, I'd still have to have a tubescreamer and the EQ totalling $200. That brings the total investment up to $200 +$480 = $680. The Jr. is much lighter and handier to transport and it's volume is easier to utilize in areas (home) where the possibility of annoying others exists. If you are planning on playing in a band, it can fall short on volume with a loud drummer (which is most often the case) Mic'ing it helps, but it's still a little weak in my estimation. For strictly playing at home, it's probably the better choice (ignoring costs).

The Blues Deluxe Reissue is $699 and can be used as is with features comparing to the Jr. with $200 worth of pedals. It's much louder which is better for gigs in a band, but can be a problem playing in the home environment. It's also heavier and larger.

Both have great sounds and I also often play a 335 wannabe (an Ibanez AS83 which is the same as the AS73 but with fancier wood). These semi-hollowbody guitars sound great with both amps. If I could have only one of the two amps, it would be the Blues Deluxe Reissue since I feel I need the volume for gigging. I have a large room on my garage with 10 ft. high ceilings and thick insulated walls and have no close neighbors, so I can play it somewhat louder without annoying anyone. The Blues jr. gets very little use since I got the BDRI.

So. IMO, these are the things you have to consider to choose between the two. Regarding your choice of music, I think that the Hot Rod Deluxe has higher gain on the drive chnl than is preferred or would be utilized for this music.

Good luck on your choice.

Thanks for the great replies.

To RVMlead:
You're saying:

Are you really talking about the hot rod deluxe or do you mean the blues deluxe??

I'm considering a blues jr tweed or the blues deluxe now. The only problem is that It's hard to find a blues jr. tweed in The Netherlands (where i live) or on a site that ships to The Netherlands. All the american sites won't ship international.

Does anybody know where i can get a blues jr tweed? And please give me more opinions on the blues jr and the blues deluxe.

I was refering to the Hot Rod Deluxe having the higher gain (In your initial post, you listed it as a possibility). The drive channel on the Blues Deluxe Reissue is mild overdrive which seems to go better with the type of music that you mentioned you preferred.

As far as foreign shipments, I am clueless and have zero knowledge on that topic.

Good luck

How does the volume box work? Is it acting as another master or slave volume, or is it more like a power soak? I have a 1963RI Vibroverb (brownface 2X10 model) that I would like to lower the volume for home/rehearsal use...

Good Vibes To Y'all.... 8)
